The Caregiver Community: Changing the Dynamics

Changing the Dynamics: Interactions & Conversations with Aging Parents

Communication is the foundation of all human relationships. It can make our relationships with our aging parents stronger, but it is also the very thing that can destroy them. We are often told, “you need to communicate more, you need to be a better communicator.” What is effective communication? And how can we make communications with our aging parents more effective for us – and for them? In this session, Jane and Frances chat with a psychology professor about typical patterns of communication between adult children and their parents and strategies for communicating more effectively. We explore common communication patterns between adult-children and their parents as well as strategies for managing conflict and diminishing frustration. We all want to spend pleasurable time with our parents and create good memories. In this session, we will discuss tips and tools for accomplishing this goal.
