[00:00:02] what you want, when you want it, where you want it.

[00:00:06] This is The MESH.

[00:00:12] Hi everyone, this is Dr. Matt and you're listening to Take Back Your Health

[00:00:16] where we talk about all things health and ways to help you be the best version of you.

[00:00:24] Hey everybody, this is Dr. Matt and this is Take Back Your Health podcast

[00:00:27] and I'm here with a special guest today which is Melody Parton from Holistically You.

[00:00:32] Melody, thanks for having me.

[00:00:34] Thanks for having me.

[00:00:35] Thanks for coming on here.

[00:00:36] Yeah, absolutely.

[00:00:37] But today I wanted to talk about the master of disguise.

[00:00:41] Dun, dun, dun.

[00:00:43] Which I call that, which is sugar because sugar has many forms and many disguises

[00:00:48] and most people don't know because some of them are bad, some of them are good

[00:00:52] and that's why I wanted to bring somebody like you on here to explain that to people.

[00:00:55] But first, before we get into that, tell us a little bit about Holistically You.

[00:00:59] What is that for our listeners that do not know who you are?

[00:01:02] Yeah, so as Matt said, and thank you for having me.

[00:01:05] This is awesome.

[00:01:06] I'm very excited.

[00:01:07] My name is Melody Parton and I'm a board certified holistic health practitioner and nutrition coach.

[00:01:13] And so basically, that sounds like such a woody woody title,

[00:01:17] but honestly, I just get to empower my clients to support and revive their bodies from the inside out,

[00:01:23] basically just helping them thrive.

[00:01:26] And I do that by personalized nutrition coaching and nutrition services and also just different holistic modalities and practices.

[00:01:33] And so, again, I just want to help people feel better.

[00:01:36] And, you know, my main target client would be women and particularly moms because it's so hard, you know,

[00:01:43] being a mom trying to make sure not only am I taking care of myself and am I eating well,

[00:01:48] but then I have, you know, my whole family to take care of.

[00:01:50] And so that's three other people in my household.

[00:01:53] And so, honestly, I found that when the moms kind of are able to capture this and do well for themselves,

[00:01:59] it always translates down to the family.

[00:02:01] So that's so cool.

[00:02:03] No, awesome.

[00:02:03] Now, we're excited to have you.

[00:02:05] And like I said, I use Melody quite a bit in my practice when people ask me nutrition questions

[00:02:10] because I'm not in that realm.

[00:02:13] I mean, obviously, I try to eat healthy, make smart choices,

[00:02:16] but I always go to Melody saying, is this good?

[00:02:20] Is this good?

[00:02:20] Is this good?

[00:02:21] And she always tells me it's bad.

[00:02:22] So, yeah.

[00:02:23] Pretty much so.

[00:02:24] Spoiler alert.

[00:02:25] Yes, basically.

[00:02:27] But let's just dive right into it.

[00:02:29] Yeah.

[00:02:29] And first of all, you know, for you guys listening, this is actually going to be a part one.

[00:02:33] I'm actually going to bring Melody back for another later episode to talk more about gut health.

[00:02:37] Yes.

[00:02:38] And things like that because that's what you do specialize in some of that.

[00:02:41] But I wanted to hit sugar because sugar is causing a lot of people's gut health.

[00:02:46] So to kick things off sugar, what do we need to know about it?

[00:02:49] Obviously.

[00:02:50] Oh, man.

[00:02:50] So this could be like a 10-hour podcast, right?

[00:02:53] I know, right?

[00:02:55] It's sweet.

[00:02:56] Yeah, exactly.

[00:02:57] That's so funny, you know?

[00:02:59] No, but the main reason is basically sugar interacts with the brain and the body.

[00:03:05] And so when you're not only, you know, hitting the body side of things, but the sugar hits the brain.

[00:03:11] And so with that, I mean, there are so many things that is involved with that.

[00:03:14] So, I mean, first we can talk about, you know, there's a dopamine release and a reward system.

[00:03:19] And, you know, think about it.

[00:03:20] Any friend event you have, any family event you have, there's typically always food involved.

[00:03:25] And always, there's so many things.

[00:03:27] Especially around the holidays.

[00:03:28] Yes.

[00:03:28] And, you know, around the holidays for sure.

[00:03:31] But that food is typically, there's always sweets, right?

[00:03:34] And so when you think about that and you go back to, you know, dopamine is a neurotransmitter.

[00:03:40] And in the brain, that plays just a significant role in reward and pleasure.

[00:03:44] And so when we consume sugar, it stimulates that.

[00:03:47] And it just gives that release of dopamine in the brain, which, again, that's the pleasure center, right?

[00:03:53] And so that's great.

[00:03:55] But it is very similar to like when we eat sugar.

[00:03:59] You know, it's the same effect even like with drug use, sex.

[00:04:04] Even just eating sugar gives that pleasurable feeling.

[00:04:06] And so there is the reward loop right there.

[00:04:09] And it makes you want to crave sugar and get that dopamine hit.

[00:04:13] That's just how our brain responds to those substances.

[00:04:16] And sugar is one of those main ones.

[00:04:18] Crazy, right?

[00:04:19] I know.

[00:04:19] Well, sugar is a drug.

[00:04:21] And people do not understand it.

[00:04:23] It's that other white powder.

[00:04:24] Yeah.

[00:04:24] Is what I...

[00:04:25] Yeah, we don't want to talk about that one too much on here.

[00:04:27] Is what...

[00:04:27] Yeah, exactly.

[00:04:28] But no, sugar is a drug.

[00:04:30] And it is addictive.

[00:04:31] It is.

[00:04:32] And the sad thing is there's so many different forms of it that you don't really know what

[00:04:37] it is because you don't know what it is.

[00:04:38] I mean, you read a box of, I don't know, some kind of something at the grocery store and

[00:04:42] it's got 50 different ingredients and half of those are different forms of sugar.

[00:04:46] And some are good and some are bad.

[00:04:48] So...

[00:04:48] Yeah.

[00:04:49] And that's why people don't understand that your brain needs sugar to survive.

[00:04:53] I mean, you need glucose.

[00:04:54] It does.

[00:04:55] That's the whole point of eating.

[00:04:56] Yep.

[00:04:56] All the food that you eat becomes glucose that provides nourishment and fuel for your

[00:05:01] body, if you did not know that.

[00:05:02] Yeah.

[00:05:03] Not for you, for those listening.

[00:05:04] Yes.

[00:05:05] But we overeat it in this country, obviously, because that's just...

[00:05:09] Sugar is also a preservative.

[00:05:11] Exactly.

[00:05:11] Because bacteria doesn't like to grow in high salt content, high sugar content, things like

[00:05:15] that, like honey.

[00:05:16] Yeah.

[00:05:16] That's why honey is such a good preservative because bacteria can't grow in honey because

[00:05:21] it's the viscosity and the sweetness level.

[00:05:24] But anyway.

[00:05:25] But as far as sugar, the normal recommended value, how much sugar are we supposed to get

[00:05:33] to function?

[00:05:35] Okay.

[00:05:35] So this is a great question.

[00:05:37] I love this.

[00:05:37] And the fact that we're about to kind of dive into this a little bit because, okay, we technically

[00:05:42] do not need sugar in its...

[00:05:45] And here's the kicker.

[00:05:46] In its processed, refined form to survive.

[00:05:49] Okay.

[00:05:49] So that means like any sugar that's made in a lab.

[00:05:52] So we're talking about the aspartame, which is in a lot of diet sodas.

[00:05:55] We're talking about the sucralose.

[00:05:58] Corn syrup.

[00:05:58] Exactly.

[00:05:59] High fructose corn syrup.

[00:06:00] Oh, we'll get to that one.

[00:06:00] Oh yeah.

[00:06:01] Oh yeah.

[00:06:02] But we really don't need those to survive.

[00:06:05] And so this is kind of where our body takes carbohydrates and breaks them down into sugars,

[00:06:10] glucose, and that's what fuels many functions of our bodily systems, right?

[00:06:13] We kind of already touched on that a little bit.

[00:06:16] But again, we could dive so much further into that, but we won't for those listening.

[00:06:20] But do know that carbohydrates, they do, they get broken down into sugars and glucose.

[00:06:26] And that is kind of what helps different functions in our body just work as they need to.

[00:06:30] It's how we were created.

[00:06:32] Well, you have the, obviously glucose is the one that we use.

[00:06:35] There's also the fructose, which comes from fruit, obviously.

[00:06:39] Cellulose, which is the plant sugar that we can't digest.

[00:06:42] Yes, that's why plants make a good fiber source.

[00:06:44] Yes.

[00:06:45] For those of you that don't know that.

[00:06:47] And obviously sucralose, not sucralose, sucrose, which is the table sugar.

[00:06:52] Exactly.

[00:06:52] That's the refined sugar.

[00:06:53] That's the one that's not good for you.

[00:06:55] Correct.

[00:06:55] So, yeah.

[00:06:57] Now.

[00:06:58] So let me dive a little bit further into that.

[00:07:00] But we do, we do need, you know, carbohydrates and things like that for our body to survive

[00:07:06] because the carbohydrate is the main like source of energy.

[00:07:09] That is our body's preferred source, right?

[00:07:11] And so, but it's just the processed refined forms that we do not need.

[00:07:14] So to answer your question, we don't need processed refined sugars.

[00:07:19] But I love this question because like we talk about good versus bad sugars.

[00:07:23] And, you know, there's some people out there that would say, you know, don't eat any form

[00:07:29] of sugar ever.

[00:07:29] Well, I don't necessarily agree with that.

[00:07:31] I'm as a professional and I've done a lot of research that, you know, the body really,

[00:07:36] it does see sugars all the same.

[00:07:38] So it doesn't necessarily know the difference between fruit sugar versus cane sugar, honey,

[00:07:42] et cetera.

[00:07:43] But I truly believe that on this earth, we were given fruit, right?

[00:07:47] Fruit either comes from trees, from the ground, things like that.

[00:07:50] And they're actually very healing to our bodies.

[00:07:52] And so I could talk about juicing on a whole nother podcast, but juicing is actually really,

[00:07:57] really good.

[00:07:57] Oh, we'll get to juicing.

[00:07:58] Yeah.

[00:07:58] I'm going to do a podcast with the Juice Apothecary.

[00:08:01] Yes.

[00:08:01] Oh, great.

[00:08:02] She's awesome.

[00:08:02] She's amazing.

[00:08:03] And so, yeah, she can, oh gosh, she has such just a wealth of knowledge on juicing and

[00:08:08] just how honestly healing it can be to the body.

[00:08:11] But, you know, I just believe that when it comes to sugar, it's the source that matters.

[00:08:14] So for example, if we're making sugars in a lab, so again, that's your aspartame, that's

[00:08:19] your sucrose.

[00:08:21] No bueno.

[00:08:22] Those are just not the best source because they're just being formulated in a lab.

[00:08:26] And so not great.

[00:08:28] However, well, a good way to remember it is if it's being processed, it's taking nutrients

[00:08:33] away.

[00:08:33] Out, exactly.

[00:08:34] And then they're having to artificially add them back, which is not a good way to get

[00:08:39] nutrients.

[00:08:39] Yeah.

[00:08:40] So if that tells you anything.

[00:08:42] Obviously.

[00:08:43] So when asking what are like the better sugars, again, if we go back to the source.

[00:08:47] Yeah, let's talk good sugars versus bad sugars.

[00:08:49] Yeah, yeah.

[00:08:49] So that, we kind of already hit those a little bit.

[00:08:51] One's made it a lab.

[00:08:52] So that's kind of your fake sugars that are added to a lot of, honestly.

[00:08:57] Your artificial sweeteners.

[00:08:57] Yeah, artificial sweeteners.

[00:08:59] What about like stevia?

[00:09:01] Okay, stevia.

[00:09:02] So stevia, I think can be great if it is just gotten from the leaf, the stevia leaf, because

[00:09:09] it is a leaf.

[00:09:10] Okay.

[00:09:11] However, when they take it and they add the maltodextrin and all of that, and then that's

[00:09:15] your first ingredient on a package of stevia, you want to run from that one.

[00:09:19] You know, not ideal.

[00:09:20] So stay away from your equal, your sweet and low, your splendor.

[00:09:23] The pink, the yellow packets.

[00:09:25] You know, leave those be, okay?

[00:09:26] All of that, yeah.

[00:09:27] And then you've got, but you've got your more natural ones.

[00:09:30] Obviously honey is a good alternative.

[00:09:32] Natural honey, I should say.

[00:09:33] Don't get the one out of the teddy bear.

[00:09:34] Yeah.

[00:09:35] Even though he's cute.

[00:09:35] I know, but usually that's made in a lab.

[00:09:38] That's, I call it plastic, sweet plastic, because that's basically what it is.

[00:09:42] No, you want natural honey.

[00:09:43] Yeah.

[00:09:43] Raw, honestly, unfiltered is the best.

[00:09:46] And if you can find it from a local source, indigenous honey is actually great for our

[00:09:50] immune system.

[00:09:52] Date syrup, that's really good.

[00:09:53] Yeah.

[00:09:54] Dates are great.

[00:09:55] You have agave nectar, which I like to use agave.

[00:09:58] Now, I know sometimes you don't think that way about agave, but I guess it depends on,

[00:10:03] like I said, where you're getting it from, the blue agave.

[00:10:05] But like coconut sugar, for example, it's coming from a coconut.

[00:10:08] Now it's got to, you know, get from the coconut and that does require a lab.

[00:10:13] So again, it's somewhat processed, but you know, it's still a more decent form of sugar

[00:10:18] than our alternative sweetener sugars.

[00:10:21] So you've got, you know, your coconut sugar, your honey, pure maple syrup, those kinds of

[00:10:25] things, those are going to be better options.

[00:10:28] So if you're looking for an option for sugar, those are going to be some of the better ones.

[00:10:31] But you know, I am not one of those practitioners that will steer you from fruit.

[00:10:35] There's very few instances that I've had to do that.

[00:10:39] Yeah.

[00:10:39] I remember you said that you, you did a juice cleanse not too long ago and you were, people

[00:10:44] were saying, Oh, you're going to drink all that fruit.

[00:10:46] Isn't that going to raise your blood sugar?

[00:10:48] And it didn't even touch your blood sugar, but not exactly.

[00:10:50] Yeah.

[00:10:51] Not really.

[00:10:51] So, which just goes to show you how healing it can be.

[00:10:54] So no.

[00:10:54] Yeah.

[00:10:55] Now we left one out on purpose.

[00:10:58] So let's talk about this high fructose corn syrup.

[00:11:01] Yeah.

[00:11:02] That's in everything, right?

[00:11:04] Literally.

[00:11:04] And every, like if you look, especially kids products, like if you look at kids products

[00:11:10] that are boxed on the shelf, which are your ultra processed foods, it's going to have high

[00:11:14] fructose corn syrup in it.

[00:11:15] And that just breaks my heart for these little babies, you know, because it is so, so, so

[00:11:22] horrible for us.

[00:11:23] Honestly, it's just very addictive.

[00:11:25] That's the whole point of it.

[00:11:26] It's created in a lab.

[00:11:27] It's very processed and it's actually engineered to trigger cravings.

[00:11:32] And so it does make us want those foods more.

[00:11:34] So we wonder why kids, you know, aren't satisfied after just one snack.

[00:11:39] Um, it's typically because the things that are in the high fructose corn syrup and these

[00:11:44] products that they're consuming, um, that is just addictive.

[00:11:47] And a lot of it points back to sugar.

[00:11:49] It's like drinking salt water, right?

[00:11:50] The thirst only gets stronger.

[00:11:51] Right?

[00:11:52] Oh, I know.

[00:11:53] And that's what kids do.

[00:11:54] They package these kids products to be all the big colors and all that.

[00:11:57] And we can get into the dyes and all that.

[00:11:59] And that's another, that's a whole other.

[00:12:01] Melanie can spend like literally 10 years talking about basically what's bad in our food today.

[00:12:04] Yeah.

[00:12:05] Which, I mean, it is sad that it is pretty much in everything that we eat nowadays.

[00:12:09] We don't even know it.

[00:12:10] Right.

[00:12:10] Uh, but yeah, high fructose corn syrup is everywhere.

[00:12:12] It's cheap to make, uh, and it's carcinogenic.

[00:12:15] Most of these artificial sweeteners are carcinogenic.

[00:12:18] Aspartame is a known carcinogenic.

[00:12:20] Sucralose.

[00:12:20] And another one that I see a lot of people doing are these energy drinks.

[00:12:24] And I hate these images like Celsius.

[00:12:26] I hate to hate this.

[00:12:28] Probably going to burst your bubble.

[00:12:29] But like things like Celsius, Monster, Red Bull, they're nothing but carcinogens.

[00:12:34] Yeah.

[00:12:35] And I even saw an article the other day talking about how Starbucks, their pumpkin spice lattes,

[00:12:40] the, uh, the, the, the chemical that they use to make their caramel color is actually

[00:12:45] a known carcinogen.

[00:12:46] It is 100%.

[00:12:47] So the PSLs at Starbucks, yeah, they're giving you cancer.

[00:12:49] We just broke a lot of your hearts.

[00:12:51] I'm so sorry.

[00:12:52] Yeah, I know.

[00:12:52] And sometimes what we don't need to hear is what we need to hear, unfortunately.

[00:12:55] Absolutely.

[00:12:56] Um, but no, yeah.

[00:12:57] So speaking of cancer causing and all that, people don't understand that sugar is a drug.

[00:13:04] Yes.

[00:13:04] Yeah.

[00:13:04] But it also is a huge inflammatory.

[00:13:08] Um, dairy is another one.

[00:13:10] Wheat isn't a gluten, all that stuff, obviously, but sugar is a huge inflammatory.

[00:13:14] Um, and people that struggle with this obviously are diabetics.

[00:13:17] Yeah.

[00:13:18] Yeah.

[00:13:18] You have your type one, type two type one is completely different.

[00:13:21] You know, they're, they're born that way, but most of type two diabetics have sugar issues

[00:13:25] and it's because they're eating too much.

[00:13:27] Yes.

[00:13:28] I mean, you know, you go to, you go to a restaurant and you order a Coke with your, your dinner.

[00:13:33] Well, that Coke has got what?

[00:13:35] What?

[00:13:35] 10 tablespoons of sugar in it per glass, something like that.

[00:13:39] At least.

[00:13:40] I mean, if you're looking at like a 12 ounce cup and that's like not even the size, I don't

[00:13:44] think, but a 12 ounce cup probably has around 40 grams of sugar.

[00:13:48] Yeah.

[00:13:48] Which is over 80% of your daily recommend.

[00:13:51] Right.

[00:13:51] Yeah.

[00:13:52] And just in one swallow.

[00:13:54] Exactly.

[00:13:54] Exactly.

[00:13:55] Yeah.

[00:13:55] And just so you're kind of aware for any of those listening that might not know this,

[00:13:58] but, um, how sugar kind of breaks down into like, you know, grams.

[00:14:02] So you're looking at the nutrition label and you've got however many grams of sugar.

[00:14:05] Four grams of sugar is one teaspoon of sugar.

[00:14:09] And so, you know, when you're looking at something that has maybe 12 grams of added sugar in it,

[00:14:14] okay, that is three teaspoons of sugar right there that you could just say pour into your

[00:14:19] mouth.

[00:14:19] Um, and so that's kind of what we're getting at of, you know, it's the high content of

[00:14:23] sugar, you know, that is so addictive.

[00:14:25] Um, and that is causing so many people, a lot of inflammation, a lot of issues.

[00:14:29] I mean, you know, consuming large amounts of refined processed sugar leads to weight gain,

[00:14:34] insulin resistance.

[00:14:35] Um, type again, type two diabetes, heart disease, so much more.

[00:14:38] The funny thing though, is if you actually try to cut out sugar for just a little bit,

[00:14:43] just to give your body a chance to rest, you'll realize that how you don't crave it anymore.

[00:14:49] Like I used to drink soda all the time when I was younger.

[00:14:54] I mean, root beer was my favorite thing.

[00:14:56] And a root beer is probably the worst ones because an A and W has got like 40 something

[00:15:00] grams per can.

[00:15:01] At least you're aware now.

[00:15:03] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:15:05] And I love it.

[00:15:06] So basically I would drink that, but then I stopped drinking them.

[00:15:09] Yeah.

[00:15:09] And then after a while, you know, you kind of like, I kind of want to, that looks good.

[00:15:13] I want to try one.

[00:15:13] Yeah.

[00:15:14] It's horrible.

[00:15:15] Like you taste it and you're like, Oh, how can I ever, why did I ever like this before?

[00:15:19] Yeah.

[00:15:20] And, but thing is you were addicted to it and then you get off of it and you realize how

[00:15:23] nasty and how bad it was.

[00:15:24] But yeah.

[00:15:24] Yeah.

[00:15:25] But on the last few minutes we got on the podcast, we could spend literally two hours,

[00:15:29] three hours talking about this.

[00:15:30] Yeah.

[00:15:30] But I want to kind of hit gut health a little bit to kind of lead us into our next podcast

[00:15:34] that we're going to do.

[00:15:35] But why is sugar so bad for the gut?

[00:15:39] I should say.

[00:15:40] No, that's, Oh, I love this.

[00:15:42] So this is a great topic to discuss.

[00:15:44] Um, especially when we're coming back to gut health because the gut is kind of bad sugars.

[00:15:47] Let me interrupt you.

[00:15:48] Not good sugar.

[00:15:49] Like why does, yeah, the bad sugars, why does that tear our gut system up?

[00:15:52] Yeah.

[00:15:52] Yeah.

[00:15:53] Well, and here's the sad part too, is like if our gut is not in a healthy state, right?

[00:15:56] Even fruit could actually hurt our gut.

[00:15:59] Oh yeah.

[00:15:59] Um, and so that's kind of where we've got to get that gut healing, which I truly believe

[00:16:04] our bodies were created to heal themselves.

[00:16:05] We just don't give it the right tools and resources.

[00:16:08] Right.

[00:16:08] So that's kind of where I come in to help coach and educate my clients.

[00:16:11] Um, and you guys listening to this podcast, it's as simple as when we start to heal our bodies,

[00:16:17] um, our bodies are able to digest things so much better.

[00:16:20] Um, and it's just in such a healthy state that guess what?

[00:16:24] We're not sick as much different things like that.

[00:16:26] But, um, getting back to kind of, you know, bacteria and yeast love and they thrive on sugar.

[00:16:32] Okay.

[00:16:33] So, um, yeast infections, things like that.

[00:16:36] Exactly.

[00:16:36] Yeah.

[00:16:36] They literally thrive.

[00:16:38] Um, even your skin.

[00:16:39] Yeah.

[00:16:40] Oh yeah.

[00:16:40] You see, there's the sore spots on your skin.

[00:16:42] Those are, I don't call them sugar spots, but that's what they are.

[00:16:44] I mean, your skin is the largest organ in your body.

[00:16:47] Most people don't know that, but your skin can tell you a lot about your gut health.

[00:16:52] It really can.

[00:16:52] And I know you can preach on that all day long.

[00:16:55] Yeah.

[00:16:55] But basically like the sugar provides that yeast and bacteria with energy.

[00:16:59] And so, um, when you're feeding it like that, basically that helps it survive and reproduce.

[00:17:04] So that's how our bacteria, you know, can get worse.

[00:17:06] Um, and those yeast infections, things like that could get worse in the body.

[00:17:10] Um, and so that's where if, you know, you cut out the processed sugars and the refined sugars,

[00:17:15] guess what?

[00:17:16] You don't have as much bacteria and as much yeast.

[00:17:19] And so the body does really start to heal itself.

[00:17:21] Um, so basically when you're sick, I always recommend eliminate sugar, um, as much as

[00:17:26] possible, um, especially the processed and refined ones.

[00:17:29] Um, because that just allows your body to heal.

[00:17:31] So absolutely.

[00:17:32] Yeah.

[00:17:32] No, but when, like when your gut is upset, when you're having constipation, when you're

[00:17:37] having the opposite of constipation, a bad breath, even things like that can be caused

[00:17:41] by gut health.

[00:17:42] And like I said, we will talk about gut health at another time, but the gut is the key to

[00:17:47] your health is what I tell people.

[00:17:49] It's the second brain.

[00:17:49] It basically, it's a, it's a, it's its own ecosystem and basically, yeah.

[00:17:54] And if you don't take care of it, it will wreak havoc on your whole body.

[00:17:57] Oh, it'll tell you.

[00:17:58] Oh yeah.

[00:17:58] Oh yeah.

[00:17:59] Oh yeah.

[00:17:59] Believe me.

[00:17:59] I know.

[00:18:00] Yeah.

[00:18:00] Uh, it'll, it'll blow up on you if you don't let it.

[00:18:02] Um, but, but yeah.

[00:18:04] Yep.

[00:18:04] So is there anything else that people should know about sugar itself before we, before

[00:18:10] we wrap it up?

[00:18:11] Um, you know, I think this kind of gets back to the whole reason that I started holistically

[00:18:15] you help them wellness is I think we've overcomplicated nutrition.

[00:18:19] So if, if honestly guys, let's just get back to nourishing our bodies and treating our bodies

[00:18:25] well.

[00:18:25] So again, that's focusing on protein rich foods.

[00:18:28] It's focusing on vegetables, fruits, things that come from the ground.

[00:18:31] We were given animals, you know, our ancestors years ago, hundreds of years ago, thousands

[00:18:35] of years ago, eight meats and veggies and fruits.

[00:18:39] And guess what?

[00:18:40] They didn't have cancers.

[00:18:41] They didn't, they thrived.

[00:18:43] And so if we could get back to that, we, as a, especially as in America, we could really

[00:18:47] thrive.

[00:18:48] And so we've got a lot of work to do.

[00:18:49] Oh yeah.

[00:18:50] Believe me.

[00:18:50] I know.

[00:18:51] What's hard though.

[00:18:52] What's hard though is that, you know, even if it's labeled organic now, you can't really

[00:18:57] trust if it's organic because you don't know where it comes from.

[00:19:00] I mean, we can get a whole nother one on pesticides.

[00:19:02] Oh yeah.

[00:19:02] We so could.

[00:19:03] I know.

[00:19:04] Nutrition is a very big category.

[00:19:06] And I just love it.

[00:19:08] Yes.

[00:19:08] Some of us do it.

[00:19:09] That's why we go to people like you where we have questions.

[00:19:12] But normally my rule that I, my rule of thumb when I go grocery shopping is I do the little

[00:19:17] five or six ingredient rule.

[00:19:20] I think you, are you the one that taught me that?

[00:19:21] Something like that.

[00:19:22] Yeah.

[00:19:22] Where if you, you look at a bag of ingredients and you look at the nutrition label and if it's

[00:19:26] got more than five or six ingredients, it's probably not good for you.

[00:19:30] Put it back on and walk away.

[00:19:34] But Mellie, before we go, tell them about the sugar detox that they can get information on that.

[00:19:40] Yeah.

[00:19:40] So I often, um, last year I did one or this year, um, in 2024, I did one, um, sugar detox

[00:19:46] with my clients and I had a lot of clients that had huge success.

[00:19:49] I am doing a few of these this year coming in 2025 and I'm very excited about it because

[00:19:54] guys, if you eliminate sugar, um, it changes the way you taste.

[00:19:58] It changes your taste buds.

[00:19:59] It changes just honestly how you feel breaking free from sugar can be a challenge, but when

[00:20:04] we reduce its consumption, our brains and our bodies just adjust the cravings, those

[00:20:09] cravings will change and our bodies will literally heal, um, as it was created to do.

[00:20:14] And it's really beautiful.

[00:20:15] So, um, if you're interested in that, um, reach out to me, uh, Melody at Holistically

[00:20:19] You Health and Wellness.

[00:20:20] And, um, I would love to have you join our, um, sugar detox and just, you know, show you

[00:20:26] how to nourish your body.

[00:20:28] Awesome.

[00:20:28] Well, thanks for coming today, Melody.

[00:20:30] Thank you for having me.
