[00:00:02] what you want, when you want it, where you want it. This is The MESH. Hi everyone, this is Dr. Matt and you're listening to Take Back Your Health where we talk about all things health and ways to help you be the best version of you. Hey everybody, this is Dr. Matt and this is Take Back Your Health podcast

[00:00:28] and I'm here today with a special guest of mine, Kylie Iwanka which is the owner of Pure Aesthetics by Kylie, right? Is that what you call it? Yes, sir. First of all, I love saying your last name. It is so fun. It's Ukrainian. Oh really? Yeah, it is. Oh that makes sense. Okay, Iwaka, Iwaka, Iwaka. It sounds like something out of a Star Wars movie. I'm sure you get that all the time. I get that all the time. So first of all, let's let people know who you are, what you do, where are you from? Yes, my name is Kylie Iwaka.

[00:00:58] I am 21 years old and like Matt said, I'm the owner of Pure Aesthetics. I have been working in this industry for two years and I'm loving every bit of it. I've lived in Hickory my whole life. It's a small town and everybody knows everybody, but I love it. Oh yeah. That's a good thing though. It can be. Yeah. But how long have you been in your profession? Because you are a licensed esthetician. Yes, I have. So in May will be two years. Okay, awesome. Congratulations. Congratulations.

[00:01:26] And you're located in a new leaf salon? A new leaf salon on 127. Yeah. The one not far from my office. But what kind of got you into that field, I should say? Since you're new. And first of all, you're 21 years old and you have your own business. That right there is an accomplishment. Thank you. Because when you told me your age, I was like, are you serious? Like you've been in this for two years? Good gracious. So congratulations for that, first of all. Thank you.

[00:01:55] So honestly, it was just wanting to make people feel good in their own skin. I've never been much for the makeup look. Always wanted people to just feel natural and feel glamorous in their natural skin. So that's kind of where it took me. I went to a New Vision in Newton and it was like a year program. Then I had to do my... Is that where you got licensed? That's where I got licensed. Gotcha. And then I did my state board exam.

[00:02:25] I had a practical and a written and passed both my first time. There you go. Praise God, because that was a little scary. Believe me, go to chiropractic school. No, thanks. No, thanks. But that's kind of what kind of got me started in it and interested in it was just to help people. Gotcha. Well, that's why we all hopefully get into the healthcare field because that's what we're doing in the healthcare field. Right. Is helping people. So what are some of the services that you provide?

[00:02:50] So services, I specialize in facials, waxing, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, and basials, which are facials on the back. Oh, okay. You said basials? Oh, yeah. I thought it would be backshials. Basials. In the esthetician world. Okay, yeah. Not in the redneck world. I got you. But facial-wise, I do dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, LED light, and high frequency. So a good thing about this industry is that it's always growing.

[00:03:20] The beauty industry is always growing. So there's always more to learn and add to my service menu. Oh, yeah. A couple things. I know what the, I think, dermaplaning is. What is the little vacuum thing that you use? I see that in your videos. You've got this little tube. It's a vacuum. You're going up and down people's foreheads. Yes. What is that? So that is microdermabrasion, and that helps with getting the dead skin cells off. Also helps with fine lines and wrinkles. So more of my aging clients do that. It's recommended once a month. Gotcha. Okay. I just thought that was pretty cool.

[00:03:50] I didn't know what that was. Yeah, it is cool. And the little dome thing you put over people's... Yes, that's LED light. Okay. And what does that do? So that, basically, the lights that is on my machine is blue, green, and red. So the blue light helps with my acne clients. Okay. The red light helps with my aging clients. And then the green light helps with hyperpigmentation and dark circles around the eye. Really? Yes. Okay. I didn't know that. I thought they were just for aesthetics. No, really?

[00:04:21] Floss. Gotcha. Gotcha. So big loaded question here, probably two-parter. Why should we take better care of our skin, first of all? And then is that just for, I should say, beauty and aesthetics and things? No. No. Of course, no. I'm trying to set you up to explain to people. I know why. Okay. So taking care of your facial skin does go beyond cosmetic purposes.

[00:04:49] It's about maintaining overall skin health, which has a significant impact on how you feel and your long-term well-being. Your skin is the largest organ in the body. And that has a protective barrier against environmental factors like pollution, UV rays, and bacteria. So proper skin care helps maintain that barrier, preventing issues like irritation and infections. Beyond appearance, skin care can boost self-confidence and contribute to a sense of well-being.

[00:05:19] So especially if you're adjusting concerns like acne, sensitivity, or uneven skin tones. So while there's certainly a cosmetic element, the benefits of skin care are rooted in overall health prevention and self-care. Plus, maintaining healthy skin now can save you from more serious issues later down the line. That was a lot of information. You're welcome. You asked for it. I know. That's why she had to write everything down because there was a lot of information.

[00:05:46] But no, basically, yes, the skin is the largest organ in your body. And I think most people don't really understand that. They don't think of that. Because when they think your organs, you think your heart, your liver, your gallbladder, things like that. Right. And most people don't also understand that your skin, while being the first line of defense for your body, it also can kind of give you some insights of how your body's working. Absolutely. Skin health is gut health. Exactly. See, you stole my thunder. Sorry. No, you're good. You were on the right track.

[00:06:16] And that's basically what I was getting at, is that people can, if they have a lot of blemishes or a lot of things on their skin, that usually can indicate that they have some gut health issues. Or some other issues like that. So what are some common issues that you do see a lot of and how do you help? Or what can you do for these issues? So the most common concern is, well, I have more of my clients are aging. So they're premature aging, or they're just more mature.

[00:06:46] But you don't have to be older to get. Absolutely. Exactly. Absolutely. So my younger clients are more for acne. Gotcha. And that's when I do. Oh, yeah. When you say older clients, what do you mean? Ew, you know? Oh, me? Oh, okay. Great. Thanks. No. No, I'm kidding. Because acne is more, I mean, you do have older adults that have acne, but I think the younger generation, like teenager, young adult, is usually the ones that struggle with acne. Correct.

[00:07:14] So how do you help someone with acne? So I normally do, so the brand of products that I use is called Dermalogica. So they're really great. They're paraben-free, cruelty-free, and they're clean. That's one of the reasons why my name is Pure Aesthetics, is because my products are clean. But I always will do the LED light on them and the blue light because that helps with acne.

[00:07:37] And then I also have a high-frequency machine that can zap the acne, pastules, pustules, whatever it is. And I always want to send them home with at least a good recommendation of products because not only is it important to come into your esthetician once a month, but it's also to have a good at-home skincare routine as well. Of course. Everybody should have a skincare routine. I don't, but thanks to you, I'm starting one.

[00:08:07] But I'm going to skip ahead because obviously this isn't just for women. Correct. Exactly. Men can get facials too. Absolutely. Men have skin too. Absolutely. People, I think, forget that when it comes to that. Men have nails. Men have skin. Men have hair. They have to take care of it. But so acne, yes. What about like another big one out here, blackheads, things like that? Yes. So I do extractions as well. Okay.

[00:08:32] So if you're struggling with, I mean, doing your own is not always the right decision because as an esthetician, you were taught how to remove and how to use your fingers to get out the pustules and stuff like that. I was about to say for our listeners that don't know exactly what blackheads are, they've heard of them, but they don't know what they are. What are blackheads? Blackheads are more of oil that is trapped under your skin. And when you're not properly cleansing and you're not properly exfoliating,

[00:09:01] it just grows and grows and grows. And then that's when, that's why most of the time you have blackheads on your nose or in between your eyebrows or on your chin is that's because that's your T-zone. So in that area, you can get, you're more oily in those areas most of the time. I was about to say, define T-zone. Yeah. So that's like your forehead, your nose, and your chin. Gotcha. Oh, so a T. Okay. I got it. Okay. Awesome.

[00:09:27] So when oil is just built, it creates blackheads or comedones or whiteheads and all that good stuff. Gotcha. And obviously they're different from ingrown hairs. Absolutely. Ingrown hairs are caused by... Not exfoliating. We've talked about this. Everything's called by not exfoliating. I know. Men get ingrown hairs quite a bit more from all the fabric rubbing and thing where the hair kind of grows inward and creates the... Yeah, exactly. Look at you. Oh, I know. Believe me. I know. You have it. You know them.

[00:09:58] So what are some of the biggest issues that you face in your practice or as an esthetician or just a business owner in general, I should say? Yes. So I feel like you can struggle with a lot, but one of the ones that I struggle with the most is dealing with some of the clients that want unrealistic expectations. Believe me, I know how that feels. So some clients may come in with expectations that are not, I guess, feasible. Mm-hmm.

[00:10:28] Mm-hmm. And some... They want to be 20 and they're 60, right? Right. Or they want to look 20. Yeah. Yeah. Like long-term care or maintenance. Yeah. So managing these expectations and explaining that time and effort is required can be a delicate balance. Yeah. So consistency is key in this. There you go. And you know that too. Yep. That's exactly right. So I need their consistency not only in the treatment room, but also, like I said, at a skincare routine at home as well. Yeah.

[00:10:58] I find that that's a big issue with what I deal with too with patients is because they want to be from A to B overnight and you can't do that. Right. But as long as you're consistent, you will get there, but that's just it. Yeah. They've got to do their work too because we provide a service, but then again, we only provide half of the service required. Right. The patient or the customer has to do the other half. And unfortunately, most people don't because either it's not convenient or it's not easy

[00:11:25] or they don't get results as fast as they want to, but they have to do it to see the results. It's just like anything, losing weight, eating healthy, drinking water, you have to continue to do it to see the benefits. I agree. Is that the only issue? That's a big issue. That's a big issue that everybody faces. That's probably the main. I know personally, I can have my good weeks and my bad weeks. Of course. So sometimes kind of putting aside your own personal feelings to make sure that you're giving

[00:11:55] all your attention to your client can be difficult. But I really haven't had a client who's really hurt me or said stuff that's been personal or anything like that. But as a business owner, because you're relatively new to this, what's a big issue that you've dealt with as a small business owner, I should say?

[00:12:20] I guess putting in the time and effort, because you can say that you want to own a business, but at the end of the day, it's a lot harder than you expect. Doing your own taxes has been something that I hate to do, but you got to do it. Well, there's people I could give you for that. You don't have to do anything alone. I know. I know. I know. But I'm just like that. I was that way when I started my business.

[00:12:47] It's very hard to turn over your baby to somebody else when you're like, I still don't know exactly what I'm doing. I don't want you to mess things up. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. So that comes the trust part. But like I say, as we kind of get close to wrapping up here, first of all, how should people find you? Yes. So I am on Instagram and I'm on Facebook. So if you search up in the search bar, Pure Aesthetics by Kylie, my name should pop right up.

[00:13:16] Before and after pictures are on there. My service menu and my prices are on there. Before and after pictures. I'm not sure if I just said that or not. I think so. All right. My bad. I think so. Or like I do a lot of like random skin facts. So just common knowledge or some things that people don't recognize or know. But I'm also on the Vegaro app. So if you look up a new leaf, you can book through me through there. Gotcha. So Pure Aesthetics by Kylie.

[00:13:46] That's your Instagram handle. And yeah, you do a good job of showing people what you do. You also do a good job of educating people. Because I find that when I do my Instagram, I like to obviously include education because obviously you need education. But I also like to show visualizations because people want to see what they're going to expect when they walk in. They want to know what your office looks like. They want to know what your treatment looks like because people are scared when they come in for the first time.

[00:14:18] So a new leaf salon, you're in there. You can also book online. You can call. You can text. You can email and all that stuff. Are you running any specials at all? I'm glad you asked. So I'm not necessarily doing a special for the month of February, but I'm doing a giveaway basket. Okay. So on my social medias, February 1st, you'll be able to see how you can enter to win.

[00:14:42] But in the basket, if I can remember correctly, I know there's a little Dermalogica kit that has a pre-cleanse cleanser, exfoliate, and a moisturizer in it. A head wrap. I also do have a doTERRA essential oil diffuser plus an oil. I also have a squishmallow in there. Can't live without a squishmallow. Little fun things. I also do have a little baggie of business cards from people that I've met along the way.

[00:15:12] Oh, awesome. So yours is in there, Dr. Matt. Oh, I appreciate that. Oh, well, that's awesome. I wasn't expecting that. Well, that's awesome. Well, I find that when you help others, they help you. And that's the whole point behind community and networking. So that's kind of the point of this podcast is to show that our referral team and network, we all work together as one, which is awesome. Well, that's cool. And you're doing that till the end of February? The end of February, yep. Is that what you do the drawing? Yes. Gotcha.

[00:15:38] So before we wrap up, is there anything else you want our listeners to know about your industry or your practice or why they should choose you or anything else before we wrap it up? I think I'm very personal. I love my clients. I love to get to know them and their family. And that's why, honestly, I think you should choose me because I will get to the nitty gritty.

[00:16:03] I will be your therapist and also help you maintain a good, healthy skin life barrier and make you feel confident. And that's what I love to do. I love my job. Like I said, I would not trade it for the world. And I am very, very glad that being an esthetician, you have continued ed classes that you do each year. And for estheticians, I think it's eight hours. So just continuing to learn and grow. And I know like some of my clients have asked about certain services and that's what I'm

[00:16:32] getting on my computer and asking like, where can I do this? And where can I get certified in this to help to be the one that people want to go to? That's right. All for everything. And you're the one stop shop, right? I'm not at all. No. Well, that's perfect. And I love that because that's why you're on my referral team, because I want to have people that I treat my clients a certain way and care for them a certain way. So I want to make sure that when I refer them to somebody that does something I can't, they're

[00:17:01] getting that same quality of care, which is so important because we don't have a lot of that in today's world, in the healthcare especially. So thanks for coming out. Yes. Thank you for having me. You said you were nervous. This was a little nerve wracking. I was saying. Nothing. I mean, you did great. But thanks for coming out. And we will let people get to know you. Yay. That sounds great. Thank you.
