[00:00:02] What You Want, When You Want It, Where You Want It, This Is The MESH

[00:00:13] I'm With The Band, Music and Interviews You're Going To Like

[00:00:17] Welcome to I'm With The Band here on the MESH Podcast Network

[00:00:24] I'm your host Andrew Moose

[00:00:25] This is your first time listening to this show

[00:00:28] First of all how dare you

[00:00:29] But second, I'm with the band, invites musicians and bands of all types

[00:00:33] To discuss their current projects, their touring lives, and lives as musicians

[00:00:36] We'd love for you to hit that subscribe button on whatever platform you're using right now

[00:00:40] So that you can get I'm With The Band episodes being directly to you whenever we do drop an episode

[00:00:45] If you like what you're hearing and might be considering advertising here on the MESH Podcast Network

[00:00:49] It is a great way to reach a targeted audience

[00:00:51] And plus I've heard the only people who listen to podcasts here on our network are rich

[00:00:55] And they're beautiful

[00:00:56] And all they want to do is spend money with you and your company

[00:00:59] So today, welcome back to I'm With The Band

[00:01:01] I know that this show has been, there's been a little bit of a layoff

[00:01:05] We've been super busy, but no excuse

[00:01:09] All the bands that we've been reaching out to honestly have been back on the road

[00:01:14] And they haven't had time, that's fantastic, that's great news

[00:01:17] Bad news for the podcast, great news for the band

[00:01:20] So today, guys I have an exciting announcement

[00:01:25] We, if you know me personally, you know this has been going on for over two years

[00:01:30] And so I'm excited to announce basically to the podcast audience that I'm opening a music venue with my business partners

[00:01:37] We are opening in a couple weeks on October 23rd to be specific

[00:01:43] And today on the podcast, I've got the guy who's gonna be opening our event

[00:01:49] Bryant Swank, what's up, Brian? From Big Daddy Love

[00:01:52] You doing alright buddy?

[00:01:53] Man, I'm doing great. Thanks so much for having me here. This is awesome

[00:01:56] No problem man, the hum, man we're excited to have you there

[00:02:00] It's gonna be a great event

[00:02:02] Yeah, and we've been wanting to get back to Hickory for so long now

[00:02:06] I mean a lot of our beginning roots were in Hickory

[00:02:09] Right

[00:02:10] You know, and so we used to play a little tap room

[00:02:14] There we'd squeeze on that tiny little stage or half a squeeze on the tiny little stage

[00:02:19] And we had great nights there. I mean those were our very first days when this part of the band came together

[00:02:25] And so Hickory, you know, was so important to us so we're really glad to be back there finally

[00:02:30] I know dude, I'm so glad that you mentioned that because I was trying to think besides the tap room

[00:02:35] Where else have I seen you play in Hickory?

[00:02:37] I know it's been hundreds of shows but like where, do you remember where else you played?

[00:02:41] We've done several outdoor events

[00:02:43] These were back many, many years ago

[00:02:47] A couple other venues had opened

[00:02:51] One or two had opened and I think they might have, they're not around anymore

[00:02:56] I can't even remember the name, you know, it's been in so many of them

[00:02:59] But yeah, you know

[00:03:01] Yeah, I was just trying to place it because honestly like that tap room stage

[00:03:06] Like I remember distinctly that you guys there's probably back in the Justin Daniel Smith era probably with Readeal

[00:03:12] And I remember, dude I remember that show distinctly

[00:03:16] They've actually built that stage up a little bit

[00:03:20] So thank you, all the musicians, Bud Jason and Steven to extend it about three feet total

[00:03:26] So there's an extra three feet there where you can still sweat it out with your boys

[00:03:32] But yeah, I'm really hoping that they start having music there soon

[00:03:36] They got COVID kind of white music out there but you know, where else?

[00:03:41] Yeah, yeah, yeah

[00:03:43] Hey man, are you guys are bebopping around and got some dates? It's good to see, it's good to see

[00:03:49] Yeah, you know, I mean, gosh, so we are still playing festivals that we technically booked back in 2019

[00:03:57] You know, that of course got hit by COVID

[00:04:01] And yeah, pun it and then some of them even got even pun into the fall of this year

[00:04:06] Which was probably a good move. I mean Rooster Walk, we just did that one, the Rooster Walk reunion

[00:04:12] So that's been in the long time coming. I mean, we were playing shows that, you know, we were literally booking in 2019

[00:04:19] It is definitely a surreal feeling, you know, to do this

[00:04:23] But we are just glad to be playing music

[00:04:26] Most everything we've done has felt really, really safe

[00:04:29] You know, we haven't done many indoor shows yet. We did one in Elkin and that was good

[00:04:34] And then we'll probably...

[00:04:36] Is that Reeves Theatre?

[00:04:38] Yeah, great theater in Elkin and then we'll probably go to Sparta and do one at Muddy Creek

[00:04:43] We'll play a couple indoor shows this winter but not too many

[00:04:48] You know, unfortunately, you know, a lot of people are still kind of hesitant by getting back

[00:04:53] So we just need to get back to normal. We want everybody to be safe and secure

[00:04:58] And feel like they can go see music again

[00:05:01] You know, I mean it's just a slow go at it

[00:05:03] But we're trying to do these things and be as safe as possible and make everybody feel safe

[00:05:10] And stay healthy and everything like that

[00:05:12] So we're doing the best we can but we are playing quite a bit

[00:05:15] And you know, bands and venues are all trying to do the best they can

[00:05:19] I know Live Nation has just announced that they are doing...

[00:05:24] All their venues are going to be VaxCard only and all that good stuff

[00:05:29] But I think there's mostly for indoor venues

[00:05:32] They actually might be for both but I know it's going to be...

[00:05:36] For indoor venues, it's just a different animal just because of the setting

[00:05:40] But you know, for our event that we have coming up on the 23rd

[00:05:44] Our capacity for the HOM is...

[00:05:47] I think what we've estimated at right like 1500 to 2000 or something like that

[00:05:51] And really we'll sell 500 tickets

[00:05:53] Because we won't give people the chance to move around and not be on top of one another

[00:05:59] I've been to a few shows in the last couple months at outdoor venues

[00:06:04] Where I almost felt like it was oversold

[00:06:06] Oh, sure

[00:06:07] There was a ton of people and even being outside it was kind of uncomfortable

[00:06:13] And so after going to those events, you know, I went back to the group

[00:06:18] And said, you know, hey guys, like let's not oversell this thing

[00:06:22] Like there's just no point, you know, we're just...

[00:06:26] Plus it's a soft opening, you know, we want to dip our toe in before we do a backflip gainer off the high dive

[00:06:32] But yeah, so we've toiled around about what kind of COVID precautions we were going to do

[00:06:38] And we just thought that with the way that the mask mandate is now with North Carolina

[00:06:43] That mask are not required to be an outdoor setting

[00:06:48] We just thought, okay, well let's just kind of double down here and just give plenty...

[00:06:53] People plenty of room, you know

[00:06:55] Yeah, yeah, I mean we've done so many outdoor events here lately

[00:06:58] And they've all felt really really good

[00:07:00] Yeah

[00:07:01] I think enough science is in that, you know, we can gather outside and be safe

[00:07:06] Yeah, which thank goodness, you know, thank goodness we can do that

[00:07:10] I mean we just feel so blessed every time we do get together and play

[00:07:13] And we can see smile faces and bring, you know, that music and the joy back

[00:07:18] You know, and do what we do

[00:07:20] So yeah, you know, we feel good about it

[00:07:22] I mean, I encourage people to come to outdoor venues

[00:07:24] I'm like look, I mean if you are hesitant

[00:07:26] You can still stay safe

[00:07:28] But come out and enjoy some music

[00:07:30] Maybe see some friends

[00:07:31] Yeah, for sure

[00:07:32] You know, if you're hesitant just keep your mask on

[00:07:34] And that's fine

[00:07:35] And nobody will...

[00:07:37] Nobody worries about that

[00:07:38] But, you know, music and just being together with people is such an important part for our mental health

[00:07:44] That I do, you know, I do encourage people to, you know, get out

[00:07:48] And, you know, like say see some music if possible

[00:08:53] Well, it lies again

[00:08:56] When sunshine, good morning rain

[00:09:05] With shovels

[00:09:07] With bone bar with no pain

[00:09:09] I'll take the sunshine

[00:09:11] I'll take the rain

[00:09:13] Still, I still try to sit back and just lay

[00:10:01] Well that doctor told me yesterday

[00:10:03] I better change my ways

[00:10:05] She ain't told me anything

[00:10:07] To help me with

[00:10:11] Sculpture when I've got a naked head

[00:10:13] It ain't never bailed me out

[00:10:15] Back in the shed

[00:10:20] When sunshine, good morning rain

[00:10:27] With shovels

[00:10:28] With bone bar with no pain

[00:10:30] I'll take the sunshine

[00:10:32] I'll take the rain

[00:10:34] Still, I still try to sit back and just lay

[00:10:38] I don't care what's the weather

[00:10:43] I don't care what they say

[00:10:45] The weather man says

[00:10:46] Sunshine rain, what's the weather with?

[00:10:53] See, I change with the seasons

[00:10:55] And I do just what I please

[00:10:59] Sunshine rain, I'll take the sunshine

[00:11:13] I'll take the rain

[00:11:15] Still, I still try to sit back and just lay

[00:11:40] I think it does weigh on a lot of people

[00:11:45] It weighed on me

[00:11:47] Sure

[00:11:48] We are communal beings

[00:11:51] That's how we evolved

[00:11:53] We need our friends and family

[00:11:56] Desperately

[00:11:57] Even introverts

[00:11:58] I'm definitely more on the introverted spectrum

[00:12:00] We would go on tour for five days

[00:12:04] Or two weeks or three weeks

[00:12:06] And I would get home

[00:12:07] And I would just go up in the mountains

[00:12:09] And not see a soul for about three or four days

[00:12:11] Just me and my dog

[00:12:12] We'd go hiking, you know

[00:12:14] Reading books and everything

[00:12:15] But even after that

[00:12:16] I'm like, oh, I'm really ready to hang out with some friends again

[00:12:19] I'm ready to go out and see it

[00:12:21] I needed three solid days of downtime

[00:12:24] To reset myself

[00:12:25] Build some energy back up

[00:12:26] But even then

[00:12:27] Everybody needs a sense of community

[00:12:33] And a sense of family

[00:12:35] It's been tough on everybody

[00:12:38] We've all figured out ways to make it work

[00:12:41] Getting together, being outside

[00:12:43] Keeping distance if we need to

[00:12:46] We've slowly been doing it

[00:12:48] But now that some of the festivals are happening

[00:12:51] Like we just played Rooster Walk, Floyd Festival

[00:12:53] How was Floyd Festival?

[00:12:55] I know you're pretty involved in that festival

[00:12:57] Intermediate involved in that festival

[00:12:59] Did that go well?

[00:13:01] Yeah, it was so successful

[00:13:04] And we got so lucky

[00:13:06] We actually caught the window

[00:13:08] Where the vaccines had really taken hold

[00:13:10] Numbers were just dropping like crazy

[00:13:13] And the Delta variant had not really caught on yet

[00:13:16] So we were outside

[00:13:19] We had a little bit of smaller attendance

[00:13:21] By choice to give a little bit more room

[00:13:25] But man, the weather was great

[00:13:27] Artists were great

[00:13:28] We didn't really have any major outbreaks

[00:13:32] So we felt great about it

[00:13:35] We were so glad to do it

[00:13:37] We were one of the first big festivals

[00:13:39] To come out of the gate after the vaccines had taken hold

[00:13:42] So we really wanted to do everything correctly

[00:13:45] Our COVID safety plan and everything

[00:13:47] And we had Virginia fully supported us

[00:13:51] And we're behind us the whole way

[00:13:53] And each week we got a little bit safer

[00:13:56] To the point where, yeah, it was fun

[00:13:58] It was perfect

[00:13:59] We were so blessed to be able to do that

[00:14:01] Yeah, and just looking at that line of them

[00:14:04] You could not have a good time at Floyd Fest this year

[00:14:06] That ticket was so hot, man

[00:14:08] I tried to get a ticket a couple months before

[00:14:12] And they're like, yeah, good luck, man

[00:14:14] That thing was sold out early and quick

[00:14:17] And what was the...

[00:14:19] Obviously besides BDL

[00:14:21] What was your favorite set of that festival?

[00:14:24] Well, gosh, Billy Strings is on fire right now

[00:14:28] His show is just so amazing

[00:14:31] He is a true rock star

[00:14:33] And he's just blown through every ceiling of bluegrass

[00:14:36] That you can right now

[00:14:38] We really do love the new band Goose too

[00:14:41] Yeah, oh, buddy, yeah

[00:14:43] It seems like jam bands kind of come and go

[00:14:46] Some will be hot for a minute and some won't

[00:14:49] But on a musical level

[00:14:51] I really think Goose brings something completely different

[00:14:55] Than the rest of the jam band world

[00:14:57] I really think that they could grow up to be one of the very top touring bands

[00:15:02] Here really soon

[00:15:04] So we really enjoyed them

[00:15:06] The Avent Brothers brought it

[00:15:08] But I'll tell you what, Turf was

[00:15:10] Playing Remain and Light by the Talking Heads

[00:15:13] Oh, yeah, for sure

[00:15:15] With AJ Blue and Jerry Harrison

[00:15:17] We expected that to be great

[00:15:20] And they started

[00:15:22] And by the second song, we were just getting chills

[00:15:24] It was even better than we expected

[00:15:26] It was the tightest things we'd ever seen

[00:15:28] It was tight, it was soulful

[00:15:30] People were boogying down

[00:15:32] So yeah, man, it was a great lineup

[00:15:34] And then of course we always have the On The Rise bands

[00:15:36] And the bands coming up

[00:15:38] So we get to check out all these brand new bands

[00:15:40] That you might not have heard before

[00:15:42] I just love how they do it

[00:15:44] Chris Hodges just cultivates such a unique lineup

[00:15:47] Of fun bands that are either up and coming

[00:15:50] Or just that they're just right at their peak of their playing

[00:15:54] So yeah, it was great

[00:16:18] The band's gonna take everything

[00:16:21] Swear can't repay this load

[00:16:26] Ain't got no money

[00:18:46] Seven dollars in a coffee court check

[00:19:06] Got dropped off

[00:19:15] My home, hey, my home, hey, my home

[00:19:18] You know, speaking of like collaboration

[00:20:12] And all that good stuff

[00:20:14] You know, friend of the podcast, Nick McDaniels

[00:20:16] From Big Something, you guys do like

[00:20:18] Have done in the past like a big collaborative thing

[00:20:20] With them, big daddy something, right?

[00:20:22] That's the thing?

[00:20:24] Yeah, I tell you what

[00:20:26] In all of our years of history together

[00:20:28] Hands down one of the most fun things we've ever done

[00:20:30] I mean, I don't know whose idea it was

[00:20:32] But we always love playing shows together

[00:20:34] And then somebody was like

[00:20:36] Why don't we just put all 13 of us on stage

[00:20:40] And just see what happens

[00:20:42] And so we started doing that

[00:20:44] We did three or four or five shows

[00:20:46] Like that, just a crazy crowd

[00:20:48] Yeah, 13 people

[00:20:50] We played all types of crazy fun songs

[00:20:52] Just trading it around

[00:20:54] Hands down, I mean, we have got to do

[00:20:56] So many awesome things through our last 12 years

[00:20:59] But you can put that at the very top of the list

[00:21:01] That's some of the most fun we've ever had

[00:21:03] Yeah, that's Killer Man

[00:21:04] I just saw Big Something not too long ago

[00:21:07] They did a, well, a Westrop Panic after show

[00:21:09] At Savage Station with the Montres

[00:21:11] That was Killer Man

[00:21:12] Those guys are, I talked to Nick after that show

[00:21:14] And he was just beaming, dude

[00:21:16] That thing was, it was awesome

[00:21:18] Really, really good

[00:21:20] Yeah, we love those guys so much

[00:21:22] They bring us so hard

[00:21:23] I mean, we love Jesse's play

[00:21:25] Yeah, he's sick, he's so sick

[00:21:27] And they just found that groove

[00:21:29] To make people dance, man

[00:21:31] If you start boogieing down at a Big Something show

[00:21:34] Something's wrong, man

[00:21:36] But they just found that mix of soul

[00:21:38] And dance rhythms

[00:21:41] They just hit it perfect

[00:21:43] I love it

[00:21:44] Yeah, for sure, man

[00:21:45] By God they got the younger kids in too

[00:21:48] You know, if you go to a Big Something crowd

[00:21:50] It's not like you and me, bunch of old fogies

[00:21:52] Running around that place

[00:21:53] Breaking hips, trying to boogie

[00:21:55] It's the kids, I love it

[00:21:57] I love seeing younger kids at those shows, man

[00:21:59] Well, speaking of that

[00:22:00] I mean, that's the magic of Billy Strings right now

[00:22:02] Is that Billy Strings is bringing in young kids

[00:22:04] Who might not ever really listen to Bluegrass

[00:22:06] Or go to a show that has four bluegrass

[00:22:09] Acoustic Bluegrass instruments on stage

[00:22:11] This podcast is sponsored by Jackson Creative

[00:22:26] Jackson Creative, we tell your story

[00:22:29] And I tell you what

[00:22:32] A lot of us, we appreciate that so much

[00:22:35] I mean, just bring the kids in

[00:22:36] Show them something new

[00:22:37] And then, you know, he won

[00:22:39] Entertainer of the Year at IBM A

[00:22:40] The International Bluegrass Music Awards this year

[00:22:43] Which is a really, really big deal

[00:22:45] I mean, you know

[00:22:46] Because the old guard that kind of protects

[00:22:48] That brand, you know

[00:22:50] Or just kind of kept him out of arms distance

[00:22:52] You know, this young skater punk dude

[00:22:54] On stage, you know, playing Doc Watson Licks

[00:22:56] Just wasn't, you know, the right thing

[00:22:58] But this past year, it's like they said

[00:23:00] You know what? He's doing it

[00:23:02] He's the future of Bluegrass

[00:23:03] Entertainer of the Year, guitar player of the year

[00:23:05] He is the face of Bluegrass right now

[00:23:07] And I'm just so proud of everybody

[00:23:09] In the Bluegrass community for making it happen

[00:23:11] And accepting him and growing the scene like that

[00:23:15] Because you know, I mean

[00:23:16] As a banjo picker yourself

[00:23:17] You know there is, like

[00:23:19] You said it very nicely, the old guard

[00:23:21] But man, there are some people that get pissed off

[00:23:23] When they hear some whipper snapper like Billy up there

[00:23:27] Trying to get it the way he gets it

[00:23:29] But, you know, I just

[00:23:31] One thing I really do love about Billy Strings too

[00:23:33] Is, you know, he's introducing

[00:23:35] A swathe of people to the Grateful Dead too

[00:23:38] Yeah, yeah

[00:23:39] I mean, a lot of the, he does, you know, dead tunes

[00:23:42] Really well, he had Robert Hunter write him a song

[00:23:45] I mean, he's taking Robert Hunter songs

[00:23:47] And it's nuts to see

[00:23:50] It's fun to see, you know

[00:23:52] Yeah, no, it really is

[00:23:54] Any time you get to turn new people on to both Bluegrass

[00:23:57] And Grateful Dead

[00:23:59] And Doc Watson and Stanley Brothers

[00:24:01] And stuff like that

[00:24:03] For a lot of us, unless you were really born into Bluegrass

[00:24:06] You still found a bridge to it, you know

[00:24:09] I mean, back when we were younger

[00:24:11] Maybe it was Nickel Creek or something

[00:24:13] Or Yonder Mountain String Band

[00:24:15] Something that's like, well, I don't really like this

[00:24:17] Hardcore Stanley Brothers

[00:24:19] Or Bill Monroe stuff

[00:24:21] But this band's kind of cool

[00:24:23] And they played a rock song

[00:24:25] Yonder Mountain would play Crazy Train

[00:24:27] And do a bunch of fun covers and stuff like that

[00:24:29] So that's kind of cool

[00:24:30] And so you kind of work your way back to it

[00:24:32] And so, you know, that has always happened

[00:24:34] For this music

[00:24:35] And that's what Billy's doing right now

[00:24:37] I mean, he's going to turn people on to it

[00:24:39] And it's perfect

[00:24:40] I mean, that's the way it should work

[00:24:42] Oh, absolutely

[00:24:43] I 100% agree with you

[00:24:45] Big daddy love, man

[00:24:47] You said you guys have been around about 12 years or so

[00:24:50] You know, and you've got albums

[00:24:53] And all kinds of really thoughtful

[00:24:56] And great original tunes, man

[00:24:58] Are you guys...

[00:25:00] What are you guys doing now?

[00:25:01] Are you writing a bunch?

[00:25:02] Or are you just kind of touring?

[00:25:03] Or like what's it looking like right now?

[00:25:05] Yeah

[00:25:07] We are definitely due to start writing

[00:25:10] And possibly, you know, put out some new material here soon

[00:25:14] So I have spent the last seven years in Richmond, Virginia

[00:25:17] We were touring

[00:25:18] I met Amanda

[00:25:19] Started dating

[00:25:20] I actually moved up there

[00:25:21] You know, and we got married and everything

[00:25:22] So I just moved back and went to Salem

[00:25:24] So that puts us all back in the same town again

[00:25:26] That's cool

[00:25:27] So the idea to get together

[00:25:28] And write some new songs is right there

[00:25:31] On the doorstep for us

[00:25:33] But yeah, you know

[00:25:35] You know, so right now

[00:25:37] We're down to the four of us

[00:25:39] And you know, Scott Moss is doing his solo thing

[00:25:42] We had many years with him

[00:25:44] At first it was Daniel

[00:25:46] Daniel Smith

[00:25:47] And then he was raising kids

[00:25:49] He didn't want to tour as much

[00:25:51] Scott joined

[00:25:52] And we toured the country with him

[00:25:54] Many times over

[00:25:56] And now he's kind of doing his solo stuff

[00:25:59] He opened a bicycle shop in Shelby

[00:26:01] And he's doing super awesome with that

[00:26:03] Yeah, yeah, yeah

[00:26:05] And so now, you know

[00:26:07] So Joey has stepped up to sing

[00:26:09] Joey was always just wanting to play guitar

[00:26:10] I mean, he just, you know

[00:26:11] He was never really wanting to be the frontman singer

[00:26:14] But you know, we realized that is our future

[00:26:18] You know, I mean, that's our path forward

[00:26:20] And he's embraced it

[00:26:21] And he sounds as good as anybody we've ever had

[00:26:24] So it's the four of us

[00:26:25] And you know, I tell people all the time

[00:26:26] We're as happy as we've ever been right now

[00:26:28] We're just relaxed

[00:26:29] We enjoy being with each other

[00:26:30] I, you know, kind of joke

[00:26:32] You know, the festivals for the MCs to introduce us

[00:26:34] You know, what I have to tell them

[00:26:35] A couple facts about it

[00:26:36] So I started joking

[00:26:37] I was like, and we still like each other

[00:26:39] Yeah, that's right

[00:26:40] We've been together 12 years

[00:26:41] And we still like each other

[00:26:42] That's right

[00:26:43] You know, which can be rare in the music industry

[00:26:45] Oh, buddy, yeah

[00:26:47] But yeah, so it's the four of us

[00:26:49] Which also makes us really nimble

[00:26:51] To bring up, yes

[00:26:53] You know, Tommy Jackson on Keys

[00:26:55] And Elkin

[00:26:56] Isaac Haddon at Rooster Walk

[00:26:59] He's a young guitar prodigy

[00:27:01] I saw that clip on YouTube, man

[00:27:03] That guy's ripping it

[00:27:05] He's so good

[00:27:06] He just moved to Asheville

[00:27:07] We're gonna play another show with him

[00:27:09] In Roanoke in December

[00:27:10] That we're excited about

[00:27:12] So you know, so we have the four of us

[00:27:14] And it's almost like telekinetic

[00:27:17] You know, we also joke that

[00:27:18] We know what each other's thinking before

[00:27:20] We think it, you know

[00:27:21] Because we've played over 2,000 shows together

[00:27:23] So we're just so keyed into each other

[00:27:25] But that also allows us to be really nimble

[00:27:27] And bring up these guests

[00:27:28] And let these guests shine

[00:27:29] And kind of really back them up

[00:27:31] You know, and if they're kind of going somewhere different

[00:27:34] The four of us notice it

[00:27:36] And then are able to go with them together

[00:27:39] And not fight each other or be confused

[00:27:41] And we all just, you know

[00:27:43] If Scotty does a little bit something different on the drums

[00:27:46] The rest of us pick up on it right away

[00:27:48] You know, or Ashley or Joey or something

[00:27:51] And you know, so we're very nimble

[00:27:52] With the music right now

[00:27:53] Which kind of creates some great moments

[00:27:55] So yeah, I mean, overall

[00:27:57] We've had such a great 12-year career

[00:27:59] But we are as happy as ever playing right now

[00:28:01] We're just enjoying every second of it

[00:28:03] Yeah, that's great to hear, man

[00:28:05] And you know, people have always told me

[00:28:08] And I know from experience

[00:28:10] That you know, keeping a core group of guys together

[00:28:13] Is a very difficult thing to do

[00:28:16] It's so hard

[00:28:18] Such a big part of success

[00:28:20] Just lives and kids and personalities

[00:28:21] And everything else

[00:28:22] Like it's just difficult

[00:28:23] Yeah, I mean most bands

[00:28:25] I mean don't make it over two or three years

[00:28:28] You know, especially when you start getting

[00:28:30] Into the middle ages of getting married

[00:28:32] And having kids and everything

[00:28:34] You know, a huge part of our success

[00:28:36] Like I said, we just like each other

[00:28:37] We enjoy being around each other

[00:28:38] We enjoy playing

[00:28:40] And also, I mean we made the conscious decision

[00:28:42] To get off the road and not tour all the time

[00:28:45] We took a small little like five month hiatus

[00:28:48] Back in maybe early 2018

[00:28:50] You know, and we just realized

[00:28:53] That we didn't want to be out in you know

[00:28:55] You know, middle of Nebraska on a Wednesday night

[00:28:57] You know, with wonder where we're going to stay

[00:28:59] And that was a really great decision

[00:29:01] That kind of allowed us to relax

[00:29:03] On the whole idea and just be in the moment

[00:29:06] And not worry about you know

[00:29:08] Growing or touring or this or that

[00:29:10] I mean, you know, you know

[00:29:13] And just kind of just enjoy the moment

[00:29:15] Just enjoy the moment to be on stage

[00:29:16] And that was one of the best things we ever did

[00:29:18] Hence, while we're still here today

[00:29:20] Enjoying things so much

[00:29:22] So we're in a really good balance

[00:29:23] We play good events, you know

[00:29:25] We play venues like yours that we're excited about

[00:29:27] So you know, we can take these great opportunities

[00:29:30] Without worrying about you know

[00:29:32] Being out or gone too long and everything

[00:29:34] And honestly every show we play

[00:29:35] Like we love it, I mean it's

[00:29:37] We're in such a good place

[00:29:39] That we can pick and choose the right things

[00:29:41] Again, like your venue, the Hum and Hickory

[00:29:44] That it's the best, I mean

[00:29:46] We're just so happy with it right now

[00:29:48] Yeah for sure man

[00:29:49] And you know these

[00:29:50] You know being on the road for so long

[00:29:53] And doing so many shows

[00:29:55] I'm sure it starts to become a blur

[00:29:57] And then once you're able to

[00:29:59] Slow down just a little bit

[00:30:01] You're able to appreciate more

[00:30:03] Of what it's all about

[00:30:05] And you're able to

[00:30:07] Maybe even put more

[00:30:09] More heart and soul into gigs

[00:30:11] Then not to say you were phoning it in

[00:30:13] By a stretch, but just

[00:30:15] Really having that opportunity to say

[00:30:17] Okay hey like this is

[00:30:20] This is something that we love to do

[00:30:22] And we are

[00:30:24] And realize that you know

[00:30:26] If we take this time off

[00:30:28] That we might

[00:30:30] Love it more when we come back

[00:30:32] Yeah, yeah, I thought about this a lot lately

[00:30:34] If I could go back and like

[00:30:36] Change anything or tell my younger self anything

[00:30:38] It would be to just relax

[00:30:40] Just calm down

[00:30:41] I mean I've always been a very driven person

[00:30:43] God damn tell me how to do that

[00:30:45] Yeah, I know

[00:30:46] And you know I've always been so driven

[00:30:48] And just wanted to be successful

[00:30:50] So bad that I would let it consume me

[00:30:52] Like everyday it's like

[00:30:54] We need bigger shows

[00:30:55] We need better tours

[00:30:56] We need to make more money

[00:30:57] We need better festivals and everything

[00:30:59] And I would let it consume me so much

[00:31:02] That it would make me very anxious

[00:31:05] Maybe even uptight

[00:31:07] And honestly like if I could go back

[00:31:09] Change a couple things

[00:31:11] I would just relax

[00:31:12] Just play the shows

[00:31:14] Record the albums

[00:31:15] Just be patient

[00:31:17] If you keep doing all the right things

[00:31:19] Good things will come

[00:31:20] You don't have to worry yourself to death

[00:31:22] They're not at your doorstep

[00:31:23] Right this second

[00:31:25] Just enjoy where you are in the moment

[00:31:27] And you're going to get where you want to go

[00:31:30] And things will work out

[00:31:32] Yeah, you know I've thought about that a lot lately

[00:31:34] Just the different mindset we have now

[00:31:36] Is like in the 20s and 30s

[00:31:38] Yeah for sure

[00:31:39] Just tell me how much I owe you

[00:31:40] For my therapy appointment

[00:31:41] Sure

[00:31:42] First one's great

[00:31:43] We're talking with Brian Swank

[00:31:45] From Big Daddy Love

[00:31:46] They're playing the home epitheter here in Hickory

[00:31:48] On October 23rd

[00:31:49] Man thank you so much

[00:31:50] For joining us today

[00:31:52] We appreciate it

[00:31:53] And could not be any more happier

[00:31:55] That you're coming back to Hickory

[00:31:56] In a week or so

[00:31:58] Yeah it will be one week from tomorrow

[00:32:00] And we like I said

[00:32:02] When you reached out

[00:32:03] And said would you want to come play Hickory

[00:32:05] At this new venue

[00:32:06] It was an easy yes for you

[00:32:07] For us I've known you for a couple years

[00:32:09] I know anything that you're going to do

[00:32:10] Is going to be solid

[00:32:11] And we just wanted to get back

[00:32:13] So we cannot wait to see all of you guys

[00:32:15] Here at the week

[00:32:16] You got it buddy

[00:32:17] Well hey we will see you then

[00:32:18] And if you haven't bought tickets yet

[00:32:20] They're on sale at the hum.live

[00:32:22] And on etics

[00:32:23] So go pick it up

[00:32:24] We're going to be benefiting

[00:32:25] The council on adolescents of Kataba County

[00:32:27] They're great organizations

[00:32:29] That help parents and kids here

[00:32:30] In our community

[00:32:31] So not only are you going to be helping

[00:32:34] The community

[00:32:35] You're going to get to see

[00:32:36] A heater of a band

[00:32:37] You're going to get to see some

[00:32:39] People you hadn't seen before

[00:32:40] Some delicious food

[00:32:41] Some great beers from

[00:32:43] A bunch of different places

[00:32:44] So thanks again for coming

[00:32:46] I appreciate it man

[00:32:47] Sounds good

[00:32:48] We'll see you in a week

[00:32:49] Looking forward to it

[00:32:50] Got it

[00:32:51] Cool

[00:33:45] I know there's gonna be

[00:33:47] The hills from the turn of the dollar bills

[00:33:49] Jacob Graham will call to read my name

[00:33:53] In time the only thing I hope

[00:34:09] Is a one out pickin' about you

[00:34:12] For the common line

[00:34:14] And I packed it up and sold the rights

[00:34:16] Get it out, tell your ride

[00:34:18] Picked up work on that rail line

[00:34:21] Little days were hard but nice

[00:34:23] We called the rail was shivin' out that gold

[00:34:26] Assuming that they're all gonna know my name

[00:34:29] My buddy, real Bill the past

[00:34:58] Dynamite from his own stashin'

[00:35:01] Barely deep between the tiles

[00:35:04] We pondered over around the lines

[00:35:06] And managed points above the ponds

[00:35:08] And primed that cap a bit out of time

[00:35:11] That last train comes and bound to be

[00:35:14] And it's me too late to comprehend

[00:35:16] And I'll be there together with my man

[00:35:19] The sheriff will come with me

[00:35:49] Wrangled ups and deputies

[00:35:51] And they'll head out to break a day

[00:35:54] And I can't recall the day too well

[00:35:57] It put me here and he'll stop sellin'

[00:35:59] Never one may not get away

[00:36:02] And I really don't know what went wrong

[00:36:04] But that fee was like a sirensaw

[00:36:07] Some day morning is my hangin' day

[00:36:12] They hangin' from that vital tree

[00:36:14] I hope the town shows up to see

[00:36:16] Every single one's gonna know my name

[00:36:19] Every single one's gonna know my name
