[00:00:02] Hey I'm Amy Chang, I'm a nationally board certified health and wellness coach and this

[00:00:15] is Healthy AF.

[00:00:16] In this podcast I'll be bringing you all things health from the newest health strategies to

[00:00:21] how to tackle those personal roadblocks that just will not let you move forward.

[00:00:27] So buckle in, we're going to be inspired and instructed and dad gum we're going to

[00:00:31] have a little fun on Healthy AF.

[00:00:37] Hey everybody and welcome to Healthy AF.

[00:00:39] I'm so delighted to finally be in May for one thing you know it's almost beach season, I

[00:00:46] love being outside on my bike and doing beachy things.

[00:00:50] The other is I chose to tackle spirituality in April and in May the whole month is dedicated

[00:00:57] to one of my most favorite things and that is movement.

[00:01:04] So it's movement May and I'm recording some podcasts this week to drop all month long

[00:01:13] on movement and exercise and I wanted to start with the number one mistake that I see

[00:01:20] in exercise and that is overtraining.

[00:01:26] Now I know that we get really excited about exercise, I know there are some national guidelines

[00:01:31] that tell us exactly how much we need to be doing and need not to be doing.

[00:01:37] I know that everybody sort of has their own idea of what exercise looks like for them.

[00:01:44] The biggest one I see is that people don't stop.

[00:01:49] They don't take the time to really give themselves the proper amount of rest.

[00:01:56] So a common situation that I see in my practice is we have an exercise in five years.

[00:02:03] We start a five day a week program of exercise because it feels so good and we're so proud

[00:02:10] of ourselves and we're learning new movements.

[00:02:13] We're with people that we're beginning to really love whether it's a personal trainer

[00:02:18] or a CrossFit class you know group or something like that and we really love

[00:02:25] those people and we just think it's the best thing ever and we are eating it up and then

[00:02:30] all of a sudden we come down with an injury and we don't know how that happened.

[00:02:34] Well it happened because we didn't give our bodies enough rest time.

[00:02:38] So everybody knows that I'm a big CrossFitter and I love it and I've done it since 0708

[00:02:45] something like that so a pretty long while and you know when CrossFit was first sort

[00:02:53] of coming out they had a very specific on off pattern and the on off pattern was three days

[00:03:00] on so three days of exercise and one day of rest and it was specifically made like that

[00:03:08] because they found that on the fourth day everybody's performance stunk and they were

[00:03:16] able to maintain their performance on day one, two and three.

[00:03:23] So clearly our bodies needed to rest so if you keep that in mind you really can sort of

[00:03:32] pace how hard you can push and when you need to rest especially when you're doing some

[00:03:40] more intense workouts. Now I'm not altogether sure that you need a day of rest if your

[00:03:47] workout is a two mile walk at a you know 17 minute pace.

[00:03:58] If your body is not working really hard then you might not need that rest but if you never

[00:04:06] check in and you never do that rest you're actually not going to get as far as you think

[00:04:16] you should in the short amount of time that you want to.

[00:04:21] So this Monday's podcast, Simple Simple, the first mistake I see in moving and exercise

[00:04:28] is not putting in rest. So take that one day, give yourself some grace, do yourself some

[00:04:36] stretching, maybe go eat a great breakfast with all those friends at the gym that you're

[00:04:41] meeting, like, subscribe and share this podcast and we'll see you soon with Healthy AF.
