[00:00:10] Hey, I'm Amy Chang and I'm a nationally board certified health and wellness coach

[00:00:16] and this is Healthy AF. Here we're going to bring to you all things health.

[00:00:22] You'll hear stories of people who have transformed their health and in the meantime,

[00:00:26] transformed their lives. We'll answer those burning questions about the newest health strategies

[00:00:32] and we'll tackle some common roadblocks that my clients bring to me all the time.

[00:00:38] Lastly, we're going to talk to some practitioners who will bring to you different modalities

[00:00:44] that they're passionate about and how you could benefit from using those.

[00:00:48] So buckle in. We're going to be inspired, instructed, and have a little fun with Healthy AF.

[00:00:56] Hey, everybody and welcome to Healthy AF. This is part two of the two-parter on habits that you had in the past

[00:01:08] and how to use those habits when you are looking to make a behavioral shift for now.

[00:01:14] As I said in the prior episode, this conversation came up with a friend of mine, Shannon.

[00:01:22] She was a long-time friend. We grew up together clearly in the country and of the South, right?

[00:01:30] North Carolina Countryside. She was telling me about some of the ways we were talking,

[00:01:37] reminiscing about some of the ways that we grew up, our habits, what we did, what we could,

[00:01:44] how we lived, how we ate. She was saying, gosh, all that stuff was so unhealthy.

[00:01:50] And I was like, huh, that's a really interesting thing to tease out.

[00:01:56] So I came up with four questions and if you haven't listened to the episode before this one,

[00:02:01] you don't have to stop now but you can pop over there when you're done.

[00:02:05] The first episode addressed what habits did you grow up with that were healthy?

[00:02:13] And what habits did you grow up with that were unhealthy?

[00:02:19] So part two addresses these questions.

[00:02:24] What habits did you not grow up with that were healthy?

[00:02:30] And what habits did you not grow up with that were unhealthy?

[00:02:37] So here's an example for you. In my family, where I was the mom and I had kids,

[00:02:46] my kids did not have a sit-down dinner for several years because they all played soccer

[00:02:56] and we either had to eat dinner at 3.30 or 8 p.m.

[00:03:02] Or it was kind of all over the place. We did a lot of eating in shifts,

[00:03:06] we did a lot of eating in the minivan, we did a lot of picking it up,

[00:03:10] we did a lot of convenience foods. So what habit that they did not grow up with

[00:03:17] was a sit-down family meal. Now when I look back on my growing up,

[00:03:25] I grew up with that family meal, that family time and a home cooked meal at that.

[00:03:33] My mama always felt sad for me and my children that I couldn't provide that for her,

[00:03:40] for them because we were so busy. And here's the conversation that it got to.

[00:03:47] Like, right, I couldn't provide my kids a sit-down home cooked meal in many ways.

[00:03:56] But there was another benefit that happened with that crazy schedule of mine.

[00:04:02] And that was we did have family time. We had the family time in the car,

[00:04:09] going to the soccer practice and coming from the soccer practice.

[00:04:14] So that was accomplished, that part of that dinner time was accomplished.

[00:04:20] So when I look at what habits did you not grow up with that were healthy,

[00:04:26] my children did not grow up with a home cooked meal every night.

[00:04:34] But what habit that they not grow up with that was unhealthy?

[00:04:41] Well, they did grow up with family conversation on the daily.

[00:04:45] So you see how like both of those can be true.

[00:04:49] So my children have the habit of we connect with our family on the daily.

[00:04:54] My children did not have the habit of we eat a home cooked meal every night.

[00:05:01] So as they go through and get bigger and bigger and bigger and they are,

[00:05:05] you just can't put a brick on their head and make them stop.

[00:05:08] They can choose, oh, what really worked for me was having family time.

[00:05:15] I know how to do that. What I didn't have was home cooked meal.

[00:05:19] I might not know how to do that. How do I incorporate it?

[00:05:24] So I get it that all these four questions are super specific.

[00:05:30] But they will up promise you give you some insights into your past wiring

[00:05:37] and how you might want to use the stuff from your past that you did

[00:05:42] and didn't get that was unhealthy and healthy to build your desirable habits.

[00:05:48] And what parts of those habits in the past that you did and didn't get

[00:05:53] that were healthy and unhealthy that you want to let go of.

[00:05:58] So you can make yourself a little paper grid.

[00:06:03] On the top, I'm going to say it one more time because this is so confusing even for me to podcast.

[00:06:11] What habits did you grow up with that were healthy?

[00:06:17] And what habits did you grow up with that were unhealthy?

[00:06:22] And on the bottom of your sheet on one side, what habits did you not grow up with that were healthy?

[00:06:31] What habits did you not grow up with that were unhealthy?

[00:06:36] I'll share another one just make sure we're clear as mud.

[00:06:40] A habit that I did not grow up with that is unhealthy.

[00:06:44] We didn't go out to dinner.

[00:06:46] There were no fast-feed restaurants. Okay, near us.

[00:06:50] We had a stoplight and a food line.

[00:06:53] I didn't even have food line back then it was a food world.

[00:06:57] So I did not grow up with the habit of constantly eating fast food,

[00:07:03] which was an unhealthy habit.

[00:07:05] And I can be really grateful for that.

[00:07:08] And I can also lean in.

[00:07:10] Okay Amy, so you don't have that habit to break kudos heck yeah.

[00:07:15] So I did not have that that I did not grow up with that was healthy was let me see.

[00:07:23] Ah, drinking a lot of water.

[00:07:26] We didn't drink a lot of water.

[00:07:28] We had well water.

[00:07:29] We drank milk and we drank sweet tea, but we didn't drink water.

[00:07:32] So that's a healthy habit that I didn't grow up with.

[00:07:36] So that will be like an indicator light of oh,

[00:07:40] it's harder to drink that water because it's not a habit I'm used to.

[00:07:45] But I can lean into the fact that I don't eat a lot of fast food

[00:07:49] because it's not something I grew up around.

[00:07:51] Same thing with alcohol.

[00:07:52] My family didn't really drink out like I never saw anyone in my family drink any alcohol.

[00:07:57] So when I look to put healthy habits into my life,

[00:08:02] the low hanging fruit of stuff to cut out or avoid

[00:08:06] unhealthy habits that I did not do growing up.

[00:08:10] We did not drink a lot of alcohol.

[00:08:12] We did not eat a lot of fast food.

[00:08:15] That means those are the easy ones for me to chop off and accomplish.

[00:08:21] What we didn't do that was actually healthy that I would like to do

[00:08:27] is we didn't drink a lot of water.

[00:08:29] So that's going to take me a little bit more effort.

[00:08:33] I feel like this was a crazy journey on the podcast,

[00:08:37] but I'm thinking you got it.

[00:08:39] I'd love to hear some comments below like this made no sense or no.

[00:08:43] I'm down with you.

[00:08:45] And when you're looking at creating those healthy habits,
