[00:00:07] Hey, I'm Amy Chang and I'm a nationally board certified health and wellness coach

[00:00:15] and this is Healthy AF. Here we're going to bring to you all things health.

[00:00:21] You'll hear stories of people who have transformed their health

[00:00:24] and in the meantime transformed their laws. We'll answer those burning questions

[00:00:29] about the newest health strategies and we'll tackle some common roadblocks

[00:00:34] that my clients bring to me all the time. Lastly, we're going to talk to some

[00:00:39] practitioners who will bring to you different modalities that they're passionate

[00:00:44] about and how you could benefit from using those. So buckle in. We're going to be

[00:00:49] inspired, instructed, and have a little fun with Healthy AF.

[00:00:54] Hey everybody and welcome to another episode of Healthy AF. This one is a two-parter

[00:01:04] actually and it comes straight out of a conversation that I had with my dear

[00:01:08] friend Shannon. We grew up in the same area clearly in the south and we were

[00:01:15] talking actually about nutrition and our nutrition patterns and how we grew

[00:01:22] up and she said to me, you know so much of the stuff we ate back then was just

[00:01:29] horrible for you. And I said really? And she said, well yeah, I mean we ate the

[00:01:38] green beans but it was never the green beans. It was always the green beans with

[00:01:41] the fat back and the salt and the corn. We always had the corn or some sort of

[00:01:47] like even table sugar or something in it. And you know we just kind of made the

[00:01:53] green beans unhealthy and I got to thinking about that and thinking about the

[00:01:58] way we grew up. And I came up with four questions that you can use to explore

[00:02:07] those habits that you had or didn't have that are serving you or not serving

[00:02:15] you in your current life. So this is part one and the questions we're going to

[00:02:22] ask today are what habits did you grow up with that were healthy and what habits

[00:02:33] did you grow up with that were unhealthy and I'm on stick to the green beans,

[00:02:39] okay. So in chatting with my friend we were talking about the green beans and how much

[00:02:49] large was put into the green beans which may not have been the healthiest choice

[00:02:56] and we talked about how much salt was in the green beans which again may negate some of that

[00:03:03] that nutrition and the nutritive value man them green beans are cooked down to mush okay.

[00:03:09] We're going to be having them on the stove for hours and by the time we serve them they

[00:03:14] they're not going to have any texture in them at all. So when we look at that what habit did I

[00:03:22] did we grow up with that was healthy well I said to her yeah those green beans were cooked down

[00:03:30] to mush and they had fat back in it and they were loaded up with salt but how many of those green

[00:03:38] beans were green beans you grew on your own land in your garden all of them all those green beans

[00:03:47] were either fresh in the summer and you might have picked them that morning

[00:03:52] and strung them and cooked them that night or they were canned and we used them over the winter

[00:04:01] so when you look at we talk about nutritive value they literally had a shelf life of like you know

[00:04:11] I don't know four hours from the time we picked them to the time we were cooking them to the time

[00:04:15] we were eating them well that's a really healthy habit it's also super healthy that we were just

[00:04:23] eating at home we were cooking meals at home from fresh foods and eating it so when you tease a part

[00:04:32] that habit of wow we ate foods that um weren't cooked well there's another whole part to look at

[00:04:41] that that's the part you keep that's the part you build up in the habit that you want to move forward

[00:04:50] so let's look at that other side what habit did you have growing up what habits did you have growing

[00:04:58] up that were unhealthy well what was unhealthy was cooking it until it was mush although truth be told

[00:05:04] like I'm a sucker for a green bean mush not gonna lie um but cooking it down until it was mush

[00:05:12] maybe over-sulting it and you know what I my verdict is out on fats right now I feel like that's

[00:05:22] a very personal decision but if you really didn't want the caloric load and or the fat load from

[00:05:30] the fat back then you would not want that in your green beans so I'm gonna give that one a

[00:05:36] neutral depending on where you're at in your life what your genetics are and what you're trying to

[00:05:40] accomplish my point is in the story is that one thing I see that is helpful in coaching

[00:05:50] that you can learn to do for yourself that I try to train my clients to do for themselves their

[00:05:56] little inner coach is when you're looking at your habits and what habits you want to have and

[00:06:04] how hard it's gonna be for them for you to break them um what you want to add in you don't have

[00:06:12] to throw the baby out with the bath water sit down make you up a list two sheets of uh or two

[00:06:20] columns on your paper what healthy habit did I have or what habit did I grow up with that was unhealthy

[00:06:32] and what habit did I grow up with that was healthy and start pulling apart those examples about

[00:06:40] like really what was it you know you could do the same thing for my cartoons on Saturday morning

[00:06:47] every Saturday morning um my brother and I would get up and we would watch cartoons from the time

[00:06:51] we got up probably six o'clockish until the time mama had breakfast on about 738 we'd all sit down

[00:06:58] and eat breakfast and then it was time for chores I had cleaned a little bathroom okay

[00:07:03] bronid daddy went outside to start the yard work I had to do little bathroom and dust and

[00:07:08] mama had the vacuum in and the clean in the kitchen so in some ways you could look and say like wow

[00:07:13] you started off your day with two hours of screen time well yeah but it was also um you know that

[00:07:20] might be in the unhealthy column but what's healthy is I started off my unscheduled weekend time

[00:07:27] with two hours of whatever the you know what I wanted to do

[00:07:34] and that's a pretty healthy habit so that might be something I carry into adulthood and in fact

[00:07:40] I do that now I start out my day with doing whatever I want to for a specified amount of time

[00:07:47] and then I'm ready I'm recharged and I'm ready

[00:07:50] so when you start looking at habit change and you start looking at how am I wired

[00:07:58] we might want to throw the baby out with the bath water don't be tempted to do that

[00:08:03] sit down make your list really look then ditch the stuff that doesn't work for you anymore

[00:08:11] and use a way to stack your habits your new habits that you do want using the habits that are

[00:08:17] already pre-wired in you that are desirable and healthy okay part two is going to address the

[00:08:25] question I have to write these down this and I could mess this up so easily I maybe I have I don't

[00:08:30] know part two is what habits did you not grow up with that were healthy and what habits did
