Ahhhh, structure. Isn't there so much freedom and imprisonment in structures!! Here's how I deal with the need for structure in my habits without sticking my feet in concrete and being trapped. (Hint: it can be done! You can do it!!)

[00:00:53] Hey everybody and welcome to this episode of Healthy AF

[00:01:00] Today I'm answering a question from my friend who said, I really like structure

[00:01:07] And I'm lacking in my fitness and some of my healthy eating habits

[00:01:13] And I want to put those in structure

[00:01:16] But I'm not sure how to do it. This guy's a business owner

[00:01:20] He's a new dad so he's got a lot of stuff going on

[00:01:24] And I've got two answers

[00:01:26] When you're looking to get some real structured way of making sure that you do the healthy habits that you want to do

[00:01:36] I like to play it two ways

[00:01:40] One is, you probably are grasping for structure because you're feeling overwhelmed

[00:01:49] You might even be feeling

[00:01:51] annoyed with yourself or like you're running ragged and you're trying to get this done

[00:01:58] And trying to get that done. Oh my gosh, I got to get in some healthy habits too

[00:02:01] And when we're going to go to the gym and all that

[00:02:06] Just relax

[00:02:08] That's the first thing just just totally relax

[00:02:12] Your life

[00:02:14] If you listen will show you how you like to flow

[00:02:18] I know this is counter-intuitive

[00:02:21] I think so many times I particularly get into this like okay, I've got to you know my weak looks like this

[00:02:30] I just need to shove in an extra three hours of weak at a three hours a week at the gym

[00:02:36] Well that is not going to feel good

[00:02:38] Okay, so I can do that

[00:02:41] I can either just like head down grind green and bear it make it happen, you know

[00:02:47] Cut time off my sleep rush from here rush to there or I can take a step back

[00:02:54] And look

[00:02:55] okay

[00:02:57] When I an inflow with the rest of my schedule and the rest of the things that are important to me and the rest of things that I know I need to do

[00:03:06] Where is it?

[00:03:08] That I maybe could put something in

[00:03:11] And take a week

[00:03:14] And think about stuff like if it is going to the gym when do you feel most energetic

[00:03:21] When are you the most distracted

[00:03:24] When does your schedule go to hell in a hand basket

[00:03:28] When do other people in your life typically need you?

[00:03:32] When do you have that alone time?

[00:03:35] So look at those things for me my schedule my workout schedule and my work schedule and all my

[00:03:44] Wake and sleep schedule my eating schedule all of that stuff changes pretty much seasonally

[00:03:51] As the daylight changes and my ability to get outside and play

[00:03:58] Work or you know enjoy that outdoor

[00:04:04] As that changes my sleep schedule changes as my sleep schedule changes my workout schedule changes

[00:04:10] When it's cold in the winter I don't want to work out first thing in the morning when it's hotter than two hills in North Carolina in the summer

[00:04:17] I want to work out before seven

[00:04:20] Right so not being so tied to it has to look this way or I'm not doing it right

[00:04:28] But step and back feeling the flow that you have

[00:04:32] that feels good and easy

[00:04:37] Then look how you can add in those little hours or 30 minutes or 10 minutes

[00:04:44] And you might want to start it 10 minutes so the first tip is to like slow down and recognize what your flow is

[00:04:55] And the second tip is and I've just alluded to it

[00:05:00] Take smaller bites

[00:05:02] So if you think that you might want to try

[00:05:06] Okay, remember that word

[00:05:09] You're gonna try a

[00:05:11] Certain schedule or certain

[00:05:14] Strategy to add in your fitness or add in this nutritional change or whatever change you want to do

[00:05:22] Maybe you should quarter it back and see how it's gonna go

[00:05:27] You don't have to you know, I want to work out for 90 minutes and let me just shove that in my week

[00:05:36] Why don't you try instead of going to the gym

[00:05:39] If you think that it's gonna work out for you to do that at 6 a.m

[00:05:44] Great get up at 6 a.m and do 10 burpees 10 squats run around house couple times

[00:05:50] How did it feel how does it work what is the benefit?

[00:05:54] Are you mentally clear or are you super exhausted before you can get in the shower?

[00:05:59] You know give yourself those little blocks of I'm gonna try this structure first and

[00:06:07] Figure out what works

[00:06:10] So when you're looking to add that structure into your life

[00:06:15] Relax see what your flow is

[00:06:18] Tip toe in and then expand based on what you learn

[00:06:23] I hope that's helpful to you. I know that for me

[00:06:28] For most of my life

[00:06:30] um a structure feels really good until be a fail at it for some reason and then it feels really bad

[00:06:42] So relax you're gonna get it just keep staying in motion

[00:06:47] Keep asking your body your heart your spirit what it needs and listen to it

[00:06:53] And give yourself some grace
