[00:00:38] As you know, August is Physical Environment Month, and we're looking at all the things in our physical environment that affect our health and what way they affect our health.
[00:00:48] And today I have a special guest on. I'm so super excited.
[00:00:52] Actually, she's a sister of a friend who kept telling me like, y'all gotta meet, y'all gotta meet.
[00:00:58] And finally we met and sat and chatted for a couple hours.
[00:01:02] And I was like, my God, this could go on for much longer than this.
[00:01:06] Let's do a podcast. And welcome Beth Blair, who's going to tell us about Feng Shui.
[00:01:11] Hey, Beth.
[00:01:12] Hey, how are you?
[00:01:14] Oh, I'm fantastic.
[00:01:16] I felt like when I met you, I was meeting a sister from another mama and a mister just looking at you in the mirror too.
[00:01:24] You know, like there's a little bit of maybe Southern similarity. I don't know.
[00:01:30] Yeah, with the curly hair and the tiny eyes, we could have been Ken sitting there chatting.
[00:01:35] Yeah, for sure.
[00:01:37] Yeah, that's right.
[00:01:38] That's right.
[00:01:38] For sure.
[00:01:39] Beth, I, as I told you in the coffee shop, I really am interested in, um, well, for one thing, as I've gone through my own health journey and helped other people with their health journeys, I've gotten more and more interested in energy work.
[00:01:55] Mm-hmm .
[00:01:56] And particularly how that shows up in our home.
[00:01:59] And I wanted to know more about Feng Shui and I don't even know where to start.
[00:02:04] So if you can just take us through, how'd you get into energy, uh, for people who don't know what the what is energy and like.
[00:02:15] What the what?
[00:02:16] What the what?
[00:02:17] And is it voodoo?
[00:02:19] And what are we talking about?
[00:02:20] Can you just start us on like, um, Feng Shui Energy Primer 101?
[00:02:24] Okay, so everything has energy, right?
[00:02:30] Like that's basic elementary science class.
[00:02:33] Remember, you know, and the thing about energy is that it can't be created or destroyed.
[00:02:39] It just changes form.
[00:02:41] Okay.
[00:02:42] So energy practice, metaphysical healing practice kind of thing is just changing up the energy.
[00:02:53] So when you have a pain or, you know, um, illness or you're trying to create something and you have a block, a block would be like the idea, you know, like you, you just can't move through that.
[00:03:08] Um, those are the, the things that you want to bring in an energy therapy for like, I want to improve my health.
[00:03:19] You know, I have a pain in my elbow.
[00:03:22] Well, it's related to a block of some sort, the flow of energy, right?
[00:03:25] Because.
[00:03:27] In the in the person, you have energy that flows through you, same with space.
[00:03:33] Now that might be getting a little too heady, right?
[00:03:36] Because I always jump right into the deep end of the pool.
[00:03:40] But basically, it's about harmony and balance.
[00:03:45] Okay, to have something work most optimal, you want to have balance, flow, harmony.
[00:03:55] Okay, so energy practices are, or therapies are the way of bringing back in harmony.
[00:04:05] Now there are tools that you can use and that kind of thing.
[00:04:08] So to back up to how did I get into this, I got into this through my own healing journey.
[00:04:15] So I hurt my back when I was much younger.
[00:04:19] Uh, I was too young to have a back problem.
[00:04:22] And I went in search of healing.
[00:04:25] Okay.
[00:04:26] And all the conventional medicine therapies weren't helping me.
[00:04:30] So I stumbled into a Tai Chi class, which is moving the energy in your body.
[00:04:37] And I was healed 100% full range of motion, all that kind of stuff within a year.
[00:04:45] Now, had I hopped really into it and done it every day, I could have been healed probably a lot quicker.
[00:04:51] But I was going one time a week for an hour.
[00:04:54] And that was it.
[00:04:55] And in a year, yes.
[00:04:57] And in a year's time, I was more better, let's say I was, you know, I was good.
[00:05:04] So, okay, that tripped my trigger of what is this energy thing?
[00:05:09] Is it like you said, is it voodoo?
[00:05:12] No, it's not.
[00:05:13] It's about changing the flow of something.
[00:05:16] So that brought me into healing touch, which is a health modality created through the nursing, uh, programs.
[00:05:27] A woman by the name of Janet Medkin, uh, developed that and she brought, she really brought different therapies together.
[00:05:36] But you know, that wasn't enough for me.
[00:05:38] That was just like, okay, I'm not going to become a nurse.
[00:05:41] How am I going to get the license to touch?
[00:05:44] Because I was a touch therapy.
[00:05:46] I went to massage school.
[00:05:48] Okay.
[00:05:49] And then from massage school, I'm going to fast track it to the feng shui because that we're going to talk about environment.
[00:05:56] Um, so COVID happened, you know, I went to massage school, got my license.
[00:06:01] I was doing all these things.
[00:06:02] I was using healing touch and Reiki, which is another, uh, uh, touch therapy.
[00:06:08] Can I ask you right there?
[00:06:09] What's the difference between Reiki and healing touch?
[00:06:14] Uh, the method of teaching it, you know, uh, they're, they're, they're super close.
[00:06:22] They're super close.
[00:06:24] They're super close.
[00:06:24] So in the traditional style of Reiki, which is much older than healing touch, there is a lineage.
[00:06:32] And so it's, it's from, uh, from the Japanese culture.
[00:06:40] And so it's passed from master to student.
[00:06:43] And so there is what's called an attunement process.
[00:06:47] So you are actually given the Reiki energy.
[00:06:51] So you have to attune to the source energy of Reiki in order to do it.
[00:06:57] Healing touch.
[00:06:59] It's a method of learning different techniques and feeling the flow of energy.
[00:07:04] There is not an attunement process.
[00:07:07] Okay.
[00:07:08] Okay.
[00:07:09] So fast forward, I was having a wonderful massage practice and then COVID happened.
[00:07:15] Right.
[00:07:16] So COVID changed a lot of people's lives.
[00:07:18] Well, it made me study feng shui, which is an energy practice of environment.
[00:07:26] Okay.
[00:07:28] That's like the simplest way to talk about it.
[00:07:31] The, the culture is that you would pick the placement of your home based on the energy of the land.
[00:07:43] And the primary reason to do feng shui back in the day was to where you were going to honor your ancestors by where are you going to bury them?
[00:07:56] What land were you going to put them in?
[00:07:59] And they had to have a good view.
[00:08:02] Okay.
[00:08:03] Aspicious, really.
[00:08:05] Okay.
[00:08:06] That makes a lot of sense.
[00:08:07] That's a very practical, actually.
[00:08:09] That's a really practical way to think, which is great.
[00:08:11] Cause I think whenever I get, um, uh, looking at discussing energy work and again, you know, my background was as a acute care, critical care, nurse practitioner, all evidence-based.
[00:08:24] You know, how many hours and hours and hours and many, many, many miserable thoughts I spent reading all those nursing research studies and learning how to like, uh, put those into my practice.
[00:08:37] What kind of patient I could use it with, which one I couldn't, you know, like all of the frontal lobe, think, think, think, think, think, think stuff.
[00:08:46] And then we start talking about like, Oh, there's energy and it flows.
[00:08:50] And I'm like, um, where's the, um, multivariate analysis?
[00:08:58] Where's the big studies?
[00:09:00] And there, there aren't any.
[00:09:01] And so it's kind of cool to hear when we really go back on energy that it had a practical beginning.
[00:09:14] It makes, I feel like it makes my, um, science part of me feel really like calm, like, no, no, it was practical.
[00:09:23] It wasn't just woo woo out of the sky.
[00:09:27] Yeah.
[00:09:28] Yeah.
[00:09:29] Okay.
[00:09:29] So they were, you would pick your placement of your house first in mind, thinking about where you were going to bury your ancestors with the nicest view for them to honor.
[00:09:43] Right.
[00:09:44] Which makes a lot of sense actually.
[00:09:46] Okay.
[00:09:46] But now I'm going to trip you up a little bit.
[00:09:49] Go for it.
[00:09:50] You can see, not all parcels of land have the, you know, somebody has got to have a bad view, right?
[00:09:59] You know, somebody is going to be parked behind a tree or somebody is going to have, you know, the rest stop down the road, or maybe the, you know, potty is right down the road.
[00:10:11] So then there's what's in feng shui is what's called remedy.
[00:10:16] There is always a remedy.
[00:10:18] There is always a remedy to bring something back into balance.
[00:10:22] Like how do you redirect the energy to either slow it down or pick it up?
[00:10:30] Like if you think about, think about somebody living on a cul-de-sac, right?
[00:10:34] So the, the back of the cul-de-sac is rounded.
[00:10:38] If you are sitting, if your house is placed right at the mouth of the street, you're going to have all that energy flowing right into your front door.
[00:10:50] Okay.
[00:10:50] That is not necessarily a positive thing.
[00:10:53] Well, what are you going to do about that?
[00:10:55] How could you remedy that?
[00:10:56] So you slow the energy down that's coming into your front door.
[00:11:01] You see what I mean?
[00:11:02] So you would put, you know, maybe a fence or maybe a statue or wind chimes are popular for a remedy because it slows down.
[00:11:12] It changes the energy.
[00:11:13] It creates a vibration that is peaceful and, you know, like a nice sounding wind chime.
[00:11:19] Now, here in North Carolina during a hurricane, you take down your wind chimes because they don't sound too great, right?
[00:11:28] But you, you think about like a soft, gentle wind chime.
[00:11:32] Okay.
[00:11:33] Well, that makes me feel a lot better because there are, there are some things that I've kind of dabbled in and I'm like, well, there's no other place to put my bed.
[00:11:40] Like, or I mean, you know, like, what do you do when there's no other place to put your bed and you want the good, the good energy flow.
[00:11:48] But like, really, it's one wall.
[00:11:51] So.
[00:11:51] Right.
[00:11:52] Well, good.
[00:11:53] So there's remedies to be made.
[00:11:55] There's remedies.
[00:11:56] And see, like you, see, I know we are definitely related because like we're down the road before we get the training wheels off here for your listeners.
[00:12:05] So, um, I'm going to back up and say, I'm going to say the idea, like I said, was, you know, the, the actual words, feng shui translate to wind and water.
[00:12:21] Okay.
[00:12:22] Wind and water.
[00:12:24] Now.
[00:12:25] You don't want too much wind, right?
[00:12:29] Living here at the coast, we know all about too much wind, but you don't want it stale either.
[00:12:35] You don't want the wind to stop.
[00:12:36] So think about what happened.
[00:12:38] The bugs bite when there's no breeze.
[00:12:40] That's right.
[00:12:41] The bugs bite.
[00:12:42] You can't breathe.
[00:12:43] That kind of thing.
[00:12:44] If you have too much wind, you have a storm.
[00:12:47] Same with water.
[00:12:48] You want the water flowing.
[00:12:52] You don't want it stagnant.
[00:12:54] Right.
[00:12:55] Because that makes icky things grow and the, the bugs, the mosquitoes.
[00:13:00] Mosquitoes breathe.
[00:13:02] Exactly.
[00:13:03] Okay.
[00:13:03] So if you hold that image in your mind about wind and water, that you want that perfect balance of both, then feng shui is going to be easy for you.
[00:13:15] Because does this feel too much?
[00:13:18] Does it feel too little?
[00:13:20] When you're going into a space.
[00:13:22] Okay.
[00:13:23] So that's basic.
[00:13:25] That's simple.
[00:13:26] We can layer it up a little bit by talking about the, the thing that's called the bagua.
[00:13:34] Okay.
[00:13:35] So a bagua is a compass that a feng shui practitioner uses to tell you about the areas of the land or the areas of your home.
[00:13:46] Or even you can just apply it to a room.
[00:13:49] You could apply the feng shui compass to your desktop so that you have good working space on your desktop.
[00:13:57] So see, like it can be this big or it can be this big, you know, like all things way out here, or it can be just that little bit of space.
[00:14:08] Good.
[00:14:09] Because my daughter looks at my desktop and she's like, oh my God, mom.
[00:14:13] Yeah.
[00:14:14] That's when it starts.
[00:14:15] Oh my God, mom.
[00:14:15] You have so many tabs open.
[00:14:17] You have so many folders on you.
[00:14:18] How can you work like this?
[00:14:20] And I'm like, I just, it's working for me.
[00:14:22] Don't, don't rock the boat.
[00:14:23] It's working for you.
[00:14:24] Okay.
[00:14:24] So we're going to talk, I'm going to put you on the spot a minute because we're going to talk about your bedroom.
[00:14:29] Okay.
[00:14:31] So typically speaking, actually probably not your bedroom, but I'm going to use your bedroom.
[00:14:36] Oh, use it, man.
[00:14:37] There's nothing hiding in there.
[00:14:38] Second drawer of the bedside table is only one that's kind of off limits and everything else is good.
[00:14:46] So here we go.
[00:14:47] There are nine areas of the bagua that we work with.
[00:14:51] And so the.
[00:14:53] Which is the compass.
[00:14:54] The bagua is the compass.
[00:14:56] Okay.
[00:14:57] Okay.
[00:14:57] And to put it in a simpler diagram, we move it to a square or a cube because that lays over a plat of a house much easier.
[00:15:08] So the things that you think about and think about as in from your coaching style,
[00:15:15] the topics that people have with you in a wellness world, wealth and prosperity, fame and reputation, relationships, the F word, you know, family, health and the overall health.
[00:15:37] And then we're going to say children, children and creativity go together.
[00:15:42] And we'll get there in a minute.
[00:15:44] Knowledge.
[00:15:46] Career.
[00:15:48] And then helpful people.
[00:15:50] Okay.
[00:15:50] Okay.
[00:15:51] So.
[00:15:52] When we're looking at the placement of your home, the career sector is going to be at your front door.
[00:16:02] Okay.
[00:16:04] Huh?
[00:16:05] I said, oh, I need to move that.
[00:16:09] Okay.
[00:16:10] So if we're talking just basics about relationships or, excuse me, the topics that people come to you about, like relationships and money are probably the two top things.
[00:16:22] You know, career goes in there because of money.
[00:16:24] Right.
[00:16:24] Right.
[00:16:26] So if somebody says, I want a new relationship and I say, well, tell me about your bedroom.
[00:16:31] And they say, well, you know, my bed is pushed up against the wall and I have one bedside table and, you know, I have an exercise piece of equipment in there and I hang all my clothes over it.
[00:16:47] There is no space for another person in that room.
[00:16:51] If you don't have two bedside tables, if there's not room that you can walk around the bed on both sides, you know, if there's not space in your closet, like, okay, I might have a lot of things in my closet.
[00:17:03] I might.
[00:17:05] But is there any space for anyone else to share that closet with me?
[00:17:11] And if the answer is no, well, the energy is telling you that you don't have space for a relationship in your life.
[00:17:17] Oh, I'm so happy.
[00:17:18] This single lady has some space.
[00:17:20] You can go all the way around my bed.
[00:17:22] There's two bedside tables, plenty of closet space.
[00:17:26] Oh, yay.
[00:17:27] Okay, great.
[00:17:28] Tell me more.
[00:17:31] So vice versa.
[00:17:32] If you do not want someone, if you do not want to have an intimate or romantic relationship, push that bed up against a wall.
[00:17:41] That's exactly right.
[00:17:42] Yeah.
[00:17:43] What do you want the energy to do for you?
[00:17:47] Okay.
[00:17:48] Okay.
[00:17:48] Because where your thoughts go, energy flows.
[00:17:52] That is a basic energy practice.
[00:17:54] So if I am saying, you know, I think of Natalie Wood in the original Miracle on 34th Street going, I believe, I believe, I believe.
[00:18:06] And she doesn't believe in Christmas.
[00:18:07] She doesn't believe in Santa Claus.
[00:18:09] But she's trying to talk herself into it.
[00:18:11] That doesn't work with energy.
[00:18:13] The energy goes where you, your intentions are.
[00:18:18] And so if your negative talk is going on and you want that relationship, you ain't getting it.
[00:18:24] You know what I mean?
[00:18:26] I had a client that I've had for a few years and I've known her for a while, have some breakthroughs.
[00:18:35] And she said to me recently, like, wow, you know, I know this is going to shock you that I'm actually just now saying this to you.
[00:18:44] And I'm like, okay, what, you know, what discovery have you made that I'm going to be shocked by?
[00:18:48] And she says, I really have a lot of negative self-talk about my body.
[00:18:54] And I just started laughing out loud.
[00:18:56] I'm like, yes, yes, you do.
[00:19:01] But it's taken her like a decade and a half to get there.
[00:19:05] So what that looks like on the meantime is exercise programs are hard to stick.
[00:19:11] Nutrition programs are hard to stick.
[00:19:13] Like, sleeps, you know, all the self-care, all the gratitude, all the things that happen when we love our bodies.
[00:19:21] You know, they're hard for her to stick because that's, you know, that underlying intention.
[00:19:29] And so it's taken a while.
[00:19:30] But to hear her say that that was shifting, I was like, oh, my God, what a win.
[00:19:34] And then, like you said, my brain goes 14 steps ahead.
[00:19:39] I'm thinking like, oh, my gosh, what are her results going to begin to look like now that she has a different set point inside her thoughts and intentions and like her heart?
[00:19:53] Really?
[00:19:54] You know?
[00:19:55] Yeah.
[00:19:56] Okay.
[00:19:56] Yeah.
[00:19:57] Great.
[00:19:57] Okay.
[00:19:58] I'm excited about that for her because, you know, I mean, there are those that say, oh, fake it till you make it.
[00:20:04] You know, like you can talk yourself into anything.
[00:20:08] Well, you can, but you're not necessarily going to get the results that you really deserve if you truly appreciate yourself or really, you know, want to create that magic in your house.
[00:20:22] Right.
[00:20:23] Right.
[00:20:23] In your home, in your life, in your career.
[00:20:26] I mean, if you think about like the other place where people want to talk, which would be career and wealth.
[00:20:34] Okay.
[00:20:36] Your prosperity corner of your house from your front door is going to be the back left corner.
[00:20:47] Back left corner.
[00:20:49] Okay.
[00:20:50] So as facing in the door.
[00:20:53] So you're looking to the back left.
[00:20:55] So you walk in your front door and you're standing back left.
[00:20:59] You look to the back left.
[00:21:01] Okay.
[00:21:02] When people want to bring in money, wealth, prosperity, and that doesn't just mean cash.
[00:21:09] Okay.
[00:21:10] Wealth doesn't just mean that.
[00:21:13] They might, that could be a dumping ground in their house where they're hoarding stuff and there is no room for anything else to come in.
[00:21:23] Okay.
[00:21:24] Why are you making that face, Amy?
[00:21:26] Amy, what is in your wealth corner?
[00:21:30] Sure.
[00:21:31] Um, actually, uh, you know, you know, the universe, this is why, um, I don't look for research to back energy up anymore.
[00:21:42] I just watch it work and I don't understand how it works.
[00:21:46] I just watch it work.
[00:21:47] So in the back left corner of my house is a round table.
[00:21:53] That was my grandmother's sat beside her rocking chair.
[00:21:56] Um, and it's got a table lamp on it.
[00:22:02] That was my dad's from his side.
[00:22:04] So I've got a mother's side and a dad's side.
[00:22:06] But most importantly, uh, the first time I worked through the fourth step of the 12 steps of recovery, I gave up some character defects.
[00:22:17] And as I was giving up these character defects, I was by a creek and I would take this old leaf and write, you know, like selfishness down and I dump it in the creek and it would flow down that river and I'd go and get a rock.
[00:22:33] And I wrote on those rocks what I got to pick up when I put down selfishness, like trust or relationships or belief in myself and in God, faith.
[00:22:48] So I have all those rocks laying on that table to remind me of what I get to pick up when I let go of shit that doesn't serve me anymore.
[00:23:03] And they've been there now for two years and where I see my wealth has been right there on that table.
[00:23:11] Right.
[00:23:12] And that's awesome.
[00:23:12] And I'm getting chills on that one.
[00:23:14] So, you know,
[00:23:16] That's why I couldn't even contain myself when you were talking.
[00:23:18] I was like, well, Amy, that is exactly what I've gotten.
[00:23:23] I've gotten a depth of closeness to nature, you know, with all my rocks.
[00:23:27] And truth be told, I've got a, um, a seashell from a beach trip that a friend of mine went on with me.
[00:23:34] And I've got some of those acorn tops that can sit on your fingers.
[00:23:38] And I picked them up one day when I was walking.
[00:23:41] I was like, these are the coolest acorn tops, not the little berets, but the toboggans.
[00:23:45] And I was like, these are great.
[00:23:48] Yes, the tobogg and acorn tops.
[00:23:49] And so I have some of those on there.
[00:23:51] And, um, I have a little, uh, little silver cross that said, God loves you.
[00:23:58] That my daddy always kept in his pocket.
[00:24:00] So that left back corner of my house is really a special spot.
[00:24:07] Nice.
[00:24:08] Well, you know, what's right in front of that left back corner, like coming, coming along that left side.
[00:24:16] So you, if you're thinking of the cube, okay, think of a cube.
[00:24:20] So you have a box in the back left corner and then coming up one box is going to be your family and your ancestors.
[00:24:29] So they're right there too.
[00:24:31] So like the, the, the way I look at it, it can blend together.
[00:24:36] The area of support and, um, on the, on the negative side can draw, you know, or build up or inhibit another area.
[00:24:49] That corner, your wealth and prosperity corner feels supported by your family and your ancestors.
[00:24:56] Right.
[00:24:58] So, you know, and then the, the third box on that left side is going to be the knowledge, self cultivation and knowledge.
[00:25:07] And that sits right next to the career section on your, you know, at your front door.
[00:25:14] Okay.
[00:25:14] Okay.
[00:25:14] So we've covered four boxes already just in the layout of the, of the house.
[00:25:22] Um, of course the center of the house is going to be your health.
[00:25:28] Okay.
[00:25:28] I've got my desk there.
[00:25:30] I need to move it.
[00:25:31] Don't I?
[00:25:32] Well, you know, think about, think about how that area as a place that energizes you.
[00:25:39] So if your work energizes you, if your desk, you know, cause like you're, you're talking wellness all the time.
[00:25:49] Right.
[00:25:49] If that's the work that you do there.
[00:25:52] And then next to your wealth and prosperity in the center back of your house is going to be your fame and your reputation.
[00:26:01] Okay.
[00:26:02] I've got three sliding glass door.
[00:26:05] Well, like three panel sliding glass door that looks out onto the, um, green, the 11th green.
[00:26:12] And so I'm always like, Oh my God, that was great.
[00:26:16] You know, like, wow.
[00:26:18] It's just that T stole it from you.
[00:26:21] Didn't it?
[00:26:21] Man, that pen robbed you of that hole.
[00:26:23] You know, and it, that is, that's my window to so many people who go past my house and being a solo practitioner at home.
[00:26:32] My desk is right there in the middle.
[00:26:35] And a lot of times I'll, you know, open up and look out that door.
[00:26:39] Who's, who's playing?
[00:26:40] How are they standing?
[00:26:42] How are they hitting it?
[00:26:43] And they all know the cat because my cat's all there.
[00:26:48] She's always out on the golf course.
[00:26:50] So that really is the way that in our neighborhood, we are known.
[00:26:53] We're probably more known to our golfers.
[00:26:56] Some to some of the neighbors who live in our neighborhood.
[00:26:59] That's funny.
[00:27:00] Yeah.
[00:27:01] So that's your fame and reputation, huh?
[00:27:04] Fame and reputation.
[00:27:05] Back right corner.
[00:27:07] Now this doesn't have to be where your bedroom is, but the back right corner of the house is relationship and partnership.
[00:27:15] Okay.
[00:27:16] Oh yeah.
[00:27:16] I got nothing there.
[00:27:18] Okay.
[00:27:19] Well now here, I'm going to tell a tale on myself as you're laughing about that.
[00:27:23] You know what the back right corner of my house is right now, you know, I'm renting here.
[00:27:28] It's the bathroom.
[00:27:30] It's the toilet.
[00:27:32] So, you know, my relationship partnership stuff is in the toilet.
[00:27:36] If I don't remedy, if I don't.
[00:27:38] Oh, there you go.
[00:27:39] We've got a remedy.
[00:27:39] Thank Jesus.
[00:27:40] You got a remedy.
[00:27:42] Right.
[00:27:42] Exactly.
[00:27:42] Okay.
[00:27:44] Okay.
[00:27:44] So then the last two centers, children and creativity is right in front of the relationship.
[00:27:52] And it's right next to the center, the health.
[00:27:55] Okay.
[00:27:57] And so that area, it's not just about, you know, children, but it's your creative ideas.
[00:28:04] The place that you want to manifest your future and your retirement.
[00:28:11] Like think about like building your story.
[00:28:14] Okay.
[00:28:15] Yeah.
[00:28:16] I'm going to need a remedy there too.
[00:28:18] Okay.
[00:28:18] Well, for me, that area is actually my garage where my art studio is.
[00:28:26] So it ties in, you know, my art studio is there.
[00:28:31] And then the front right corner next to the career center is going to be your helpful people.
[00:28:37] Okay.
[00:28:38] So this is not just people physically.
[00:28:44] This is, can be your guides, your mentors, teachers.
[00:28:50] It can be seen and unseen things.
[00:28:53] Right.
[00:28:53] So we can talk, we can pull in the angels and the saints into this category.
[00:28:58] Okay.
[00:28:59] And we could go down the rabbit hole on this cube for days.
[00:29:06] Or, you know, I want to talk a little bit about remedies and things like that.
[00:29:11] Yeah, that would be great.
[00:29:13] And I have a question.
[00:29:14] So when I think about my little cube, my house is structured.
[00:29:18] So really, you walk in the front door and you're inside a great big room that basically
[00:29:23] has the dining room.
[00:29:24] I have a desk right in the middle.
[00:29:26] That's where I do my work.
[00:29:27] And then the living room, right?
[00:29:29] And then the bedrooms are kind of off to the side.
[00:29:31] And then I have one bonus room back here.
[00:29:33] So when I look at my cube, can I just do, it's the cube of that room?
[00:29:41] Yeah.
[00:29:41] So you have options.
[00:29:43] You can do the cube of the house.
[00:29:46] Okay.
[00:29:46] And then you can take the cube and look at the cube in each room.
[00:29:52] Because this is where you're leading the witness here, Amy, because this is where the
[00:29:56] remedies come in.
[00:29:58] Right.
[00:29:58] Right.
[00:29:59] So if I'm going to go back to the thing that a lot of people love to talk about, which is
[00:30:05] the relationship.
[00:30:06] Okay.
[00:30:07] If I want to adjust the, you know, if it's like for me, the relationship is in the toilet,
[00:30:14] so to speak.
[00:30:14] Right.
[00:30:15] I can apply the cube there to bring in some energy.
[00:30:20] And I can make that relationship section a smaller piece of that room.
[00:30:25] So I'm bringing in the eight other areas of my life into that space to help nurture the
[00:30:34] relationship sector or the overall picture.
[00:30:38] Does that make sense?
[00:30:39] I think, let me give it back to you.
[00:30:40] So if you have one area that isn't arranged optimally and you think might be stagnant in
[00:30:52] your life, you can take pieces of the positive areas of the other eight areas of your life
[00:31:01] and sort of put them around that area to sort of like bolster it up.
[00:31:06] Yeah, exactly.
[00:31:09] Exactly.
[00:31:10] Because we also work with the elements, right?
[00:31:15] So there's fire, water, earth, wood, and metal, five element theory in Chinese medicine
[00:31:26] that can bolster these areas too.
[00:31:32] So there are different layers.
[00:31:33] And like I said, we talked about the wind chimes, right?
[00:31:37] You can add mirrors are a good remedy to reflect what you want this area to reflect.
[00:31:46] That's one option.
[00:31:49] Plants are great.
[00:31:51] You mentioned your cat.
[00:31:53] Pets are a great remedy for stirring up the energy by your cat just going around the house.
[00:31:59] What about pet hair?
[00:32:00] How about pet hair?
[00:32:02] Well, I can tell you there's a lot of pet hair.
[00:32:06] In that right back corner of my house.
[00:32:09] Well, you know, okay, so that comes to one of my favorite principles of feng shui, which is when you're looking to make a change,
[00:32:19] move 27 things.
[00:32:22] And it could be 27 pieces of pet hair if you want.
[00:32:26] Yeah, that can be done like that.
[00:32:29] It can be done like that.
[00:32:31] You know, you reference your computer and your daughter talking about your desktop.
[00:32:36] You could close 27 tabs on your computer.
[00:32:39] That changes the energy of your workspace.
[00:32:42] You see, by the time you move things around, that's the beauty of feng shui.
[00:32:49] By the time you move things around, you've created a different perspective and a different flow of energy.
[00:32:56] Okay.
[00:32:57] Okay.
[00:32:57] So, and it's always 27.
[00:32:58] It's not like three.
[00:33:00] Well.
[00:33:01] But 27 is the whole thing.
[00:33:03] Like you move 27 things.
[00:33:05] By the time you move 27 things, things are going to look different.
[00:33:10] Okay.
[00:33:10] And again, it's one of these quirky little, what do I want to call it?
[00:33:17] There's a word that's just not coming to me.
[00:33:19] But it's an anecdotal thing, but it's nine is a sacred number in feng shui.
[00:33:28] And so 27 adds to nine, two and seven together adds to nine.
[00:33:34] So it's an auspicious kind of thing.
[00:33:36] So by taking the practice seriously and moving 27 things, something's going to look different.
[00:33:42] Well, and you know, the Trinity, three is a powerful number too.
[00:33:46] So you've got nine and three is 27.
[00:33:49] Exactly.
[00:33:50] That's right.
[00:33:51] Yeah.
[00:33:52] And then you got two and seven is 20.
[00:33:53] Yeah.
[00:33:55] Yeah.
[00:33:55] Well, I will say in that corner of my house, I have a like double table thing.
[00:34:04] It's metal and wood.
[00:34:06] And I have a plant, a real plant.
[00:34:11] So it's got dirt and it was given to me by a friend in an especially challenging time.
[00:34:16] And I have a speaker for music.
[00:34:19] How does music come in to this anyway?
[00:34:22] Sure it does.
[00:34:23] Sure it does.
[00:34:24] I mean, it's a frequency thing.
[00:34:27] Like you want to think about the type of music that you have.
[00:34:32] What kind of movement does it create?
[00:34:36] Is it linear?
[00:34:37] You know, think about the sound of how music plays.
[00:34:40] Is it all over the place?
[00:34:42] Because that ties into different elements as well.
[00:34:46] Like you think about like nature sounds rolling through a home, that kind of thing.
[00:34:53] Yeah.
[00:34:53] I'll probably need to.
[00:34:55] What kind of movement does it make?
[00:34:59] Yeah, I know.
[00:35:00] Right.
[00:35:00] Yeah.
[00:35:00] Well, you know.
[00:35:01] The wake up and let's go movement most of the time.
[00:35:06] Right.
[00:35:06] May have to put some gentle nature sounds on sometimes just to bring it down.
[00:35:15] Right.
[00:35:16] Right.
[00:35:16] Okay, good.
[00:35:17] So you also said mirrors and you said to reflect what you want.
[00:35:23] So if I put.
[00:35:25] Or.
[00:35:25] Go ahead.
[00:35:26] I was going to say if I put a mirror up on this side of my right corner,
[00:35:32] which is my relationship corner, it would reflect all the spirituality and ancestry I have in my left corner.
[00:35:45] And that's very strong for me.
[00:35:47] So that would be where I want to place that.
[00:35:49] I don't want to shine it toward the front of my house because that's not as strong a spot for me.
[00:35:54] I want to shine it toward the stronger.
[00:35:57] Yes.
[00:35:59] And see the thing like I'll go back to that example we were giving about if you lived on a cul-de-sac and you were at the end of the street.
[00:36:07] Okay.
[00:36:09] You don't want to place.
[00:36:11] You don't want to place the mirror at the end.
[00:36:15] Like if you opened your front door, if you put the mirror at the end of the hallway, it would just reflect it all the way back.
[00:36:22] And you would just.
[00:36:23] The energy would just hit the mirror and go the other way.
[00:36:26] Okay.
[00:36:27] Sometimes what you want to create is the flow of energy.
[00:36:30] So it would be perpendicular to, you know, so that it makes more circular motion of energy coming into the house.
[00:36:41] Right.
[00:36:41] It slows it down by giving it a curve.
[00:36:44] Okay.
[00:36:45] If that makes sense.
[00:36:47] Yeah, that does make sense.
[00:36:48] So when you, if we were talking about the cul-de-sac house, when you walk in the front door, you might want to have a mirror on the side wall on the left or on the side wall on the right.
[00:37:02] Because then it will help that energy swoosh instead of just like ping ponging back and forth through your house.
[00:37:10] Right.
[00:37:11] Okay.
[00:37:11] Yeah, exactly.
[00:37:13] And like, you know, seasonally people change up the energy in their house by, you know, opening windows and that kind of thing.
[00:37:23] Well, if you think about it, if you have like my house happens to be east west exposure.
[00:37:31] Okay.
[00:37:31] So if I open my sliding door at the back of my house and I open up my front windows, I'm just getting wind going straight through my house.
[00:37:41] It's not stirring anything up.
[00:37:44] Okay.
[00:37:45] So how do I affect that?
[00:37:48] Well, you know, I do have a ceiling fan, so I can get that to create the swirl.
[00:37:54] Or I may, you know, decide I'm going to open the back door just a little bit so that it's not this rush of, yeah, exactly.
[00:38:06] So there are things that you can do.
[00:38:09] You know, like the change of seasons, I might want to air the house out.
[00:38:14] So like opening up all the windows and letting it just blow through.
[00:38:18] But then when I want to settle into the energy of the house, I'm going to regulate how the wind again comes through my house.
[00:38:29] Okay.
[00:38:29] Yeah, I really, I get that.
[00:38:31] Because, you know, if you open the back door, front door, some days it's very pleasant.
[00:38:36] But some days it's blowing all the stuff off the desk, papers are flying everywhere, and one of those doors ends up slamming shut.
[00:38:46] Yeah.
[00:38:47] And that is not creating harmony.
[00:38:49] No, it's not.
[00:38:50] There's no harmony in that.
[00:38:51] It's not a nice flowy thing.
[00:38:55] Okay.
[00:38:56] All right.
[00:38:56] I can get down with that.
[00:38:57] So if you were to nutshell for people benefits of just investigating and toying with the energy in their home and maybe using feng shui as a tool to experiment, what might be the benefit for playing around with that?
[00:39:19] Okay.
[00:39:20] This is the mic drop kind of thing.
[00:39:22] Your environment is a reflection of your inner landscape.
[00:39:30] Okay.
[00:39:31] Let's let that settle.
[00:39:33] Let's push the pause button.
[00:39:37] So your environment is the reflection of your inner landscape.
[00:39:45] I often tell clients, you know, what's important to you.
[00:39:52] And they tell me, and it's always like my faith and my family and, you know, fulfillment and blah, blah, blah.
[00:39:58] And I say, okay, look at your calendar.
[00:40:03] Do they match?
[00:40:05] Right.
[00:40:06] Because your calendar is showing you what is actually your priority.
[00:40:12] So that's a good one.
[00:40:14] When you look around your house, you're seeing an inside x-ray.
[00:40:20] Not what you think you're like, but, you know, energetically what you're like.
[00:40:26] Right.
[00:40:27] Now, for you and I.
[00:40:28] People are upset by this because I know you work with people in their homes.
[00:40:31] Is it shocking to them?
[00:40:34] Well, it is shocking.
[00:40:35] And then, you know, there is a little issue, little hiccup with that mic drop that I just gave you.
[00:40:41] Because, like, if you live alone like I do, you know, I only have two four-legged living with me.
[00:40:47] It's a clear picture of whose landscape it is.
[00:40:53] Right.
[00:40:54] But if I'm cohabitating with people, you know, family members, significant other, spouse, whatever, and children, the landscape is going to look differently.
[00:41:07] And so to identify your landscape, if you cohabitate with people, you've got to look at a space that you're claiming for yourself.
[00:41:17] So, again, apply the cube to your personal space and see what happens.
[00:41:26] And see if it's a true picture, does it line up to, like you said, your calendar?
[00:41:31] Is it showing you the picture of what's important to you in your space?
[00:41:34] Or are you letting everyone else that you live with, their stuff pile on to your space,
[00:41:41] which affects your peace and harmony on the inside if you're always putting these important people?
[00:41:48] I'm not dissing that they're not important, but you keep putting your stuff first and you're not taking care of your stuff.
[00:41:54] Your landscape isn't going to look too good.
[00:41:57] Yeah.
[00:41:58] It doesn't look like you.
[00:42:00] Right.
[00:42:00] Exactly.
[00:42:02] You know, when I was not as spiritually healthy as I am now, my calendar looked like everyone else.
[00:42:11] But there was no flavor of Amy Chang on it.
[00:42:18] She was just gone missing.
[00:42:21] Yeah.
[00:42:22] And so I really get that, you know, you might not want to, like, throw out your toddler.
[00:42:30] You may not want to build them a room in the backyard or anything.
[00:42:35] But, you know, having yourself represented somewhere, maybe in a private way,
[00:42:43] and having yourself at least showing up somewhere in the larger zone.
[00:42:50] I was just telling a friend of mine, we were talking about when I first started meditating,
[00:42:55] it was like, I don't know, 14, 15 years ago.
[00:42:58] And when I started, I had a special place that I meditated, and it was in my closet.
[00:43:06] Because I had organized it, and it had, like, labels on it, and it was just the way I wanted it to be.
[00:43:13] I had a Russian housekeeper at the time, so all the labels were both in Russian and in English.
[00:43:18] Everything had a place, and everything was in its place, and everything was organized.
[00:43:21] It felt like an oasis from the chaos storm of my life.
[00:43:27] And so I would go in there every day and look at all the shelves with the neatly hung up things and the labels,
[00:43:34] and I just, you know, that was my space.
[00:43:38] See?
[00:43:39] And you had harmony there because it felt like you,
[00:43:44] and it had that balance of flow in there, you know?
[00:43:50] So...
[00:43:50] And it really, and historically, then when I moved, when I downsized,
[00:43:55] after my marriage ended, and really my bedroom was my bedroom, right?
[00:43:59] It was nobody else's but mine.
[00:44:01] My closet was that same way.
[00:44:03] Like, everything was just held up.
[00:44:05] And then, like, I had the Avett brother concert tickets hung up,
[00:44:09] and the drawings that the children had done were up on the walls of that closet.
[00:44:15] Like, the really special things were in the walls of that closet.
[00:44:19] I had a mirror in there, and...
[00:44:23] Yeah, it was just...
[00:44:24] It was a sort of a space, and I loved going in my closet.
[00:44:28] Wow, this seems to be a common theme.
[00:44:33] Well, it was sanctuary.
[00:44:34] You know, like, I look at it that way.
[00:44:36] It was sanctuary.
[00:44:37] It gives you, you know, that place of recharge.
[00:44:46] And that's really the key.
[00:44:49] Like, let's go back to that original tenet of feng shui,
[00:44:53] which was to give your ancestors an auspicious place to rest, right?
[00:45:00] You know, the final rest, but it was still rest.
[00:45:03] And so, when you create something for yourself like that,
[00:45:08] a place where you can totally be,
[00:45:12] that's the icing on the cake for the feng shui practitioner.
[00:45:17] Now, here's the thing about feng shui that I absolutely love
[00:45:21] as being a practitioner of it.
[00:45:24] Because when I was a massage therapist, and I am now retired,
[00:45:29] you know, people would come to me for the energy therapy,
[00:45:32] and they would say, you know, help me.
[00:45:34] Fix me.
[00:45:35] This hurts.
[00:45:36] That hurts.
[00:45:37] What can you do for me?
[00:45:40] Okay?
[00:45:40] As a feng shui practitioner, I get to say,
[00:45:44] oh, here, take a, you know, let's record this
[00:45:46] or take some good notes,
[00:45:48] because I'm going to point out what you have to clean up for you.
[00:45:54] You know, so will I help you clean it up?
[00:45:58] Yes, I will.
[00:46:00] However, you have to be an active role in it
[00:46:03] because it is about your space.
[00:46:06] And it mirrors your inner landscape.
[00:46:11] It's like having your fingerprint.
[00:46:13] Nobody else can do your fingerprint for you.
[00:46:15] Yeah.
[00:46:16] They can help you put your finger on the thing,
[00:46:18] but they can't do your fingerprint for you.
[00:46:20] It's your fingerprint.
[00:46:22] It is.
[00:46:23] It is.
[00:46:23] And isn't that life though?
[00:46:25] Like your spiritual journey is your spiritual journey.
[00:46:28] I can't do it for you.
[00:46:30] You know, that is really,
[00:46:33] and we talked about this when we were coffeeing,
[00:46:35] why I love being a coach.
[00:46:37] I do not want to take charge of anybody else.
[00:46:41] I'm on the struggle bus just trying to control my own life.
[00:46:44] I sure as heck don't want to have to control yours.
[00:46:47] You know, your health, your body, your choices are all yours.
[00:46:51] And what a gift and a responsibility that we sometimes avoid.
[00:46:57] So yeah, I'm with you on that.
[00:47:00] But the reward, the reward from mining down deep into yourself
[00:47:06] and discovering your own landscape far exceeds,
[00:47:14] far exceeds any rudimentary mapping sketch I could do of your landscape.
[00:47:22] You know?
[00:47:23] Yeah.
[00:47:25] So.
[00:47:27] Oh gosh.
[00:47:27] This is okay.
[00:47:28] So it's about time to wrap.
[00:47:30] I want to know if you could tell people to assess one thing in their house,
[00:47:38] what would it be?
[00:47:41] Oh, okay.
[00:47:43] Well, this is something that is easy.
[00:47:46] I want to give some great.
[00:47:47] Something easy.
[00:47:50] How many pairs of shoes do you have laying around your house?
[00:47:54] And are they all in the same place?
[00:47:57] Or do they kind of get scattered around?
[00:48:00] Because that is an indication of the, you know, if you're moving yourself in multiple directions.
[00:48:08] Oh.
[00:48:09] Okay.
[00:48:10] I love that.
[00:48:11] You are hitting the nail on the head.
[00:48:14] I don't know if this is divinely inspired or not, but my daughter always takes off her shoes,
[00:48:20] you know, when she comes in the house.
[00:48:22] So all of her shoes are on a rack in the front of the house.
[00:48:27] Makes me crazy.
[00:48:27] I don't like seeing them, but you know, whatever.
[00:48:29] They're all there.
[00:48:30] And she's very focused.
[00:48:31] She's got one job.
[00:48:33] You know, it's graduate from college and get into med school.
[00:48:35] And to, you know, be pre-med, she's got to be very focused.
[00:48:39] And that's what she's doing.
[00:48:41] Meanwhile, my shoes are like under my desk.
[00:48:45] And then they might be over at the orange chair if I'm watching the golfers or meditating.
[00:48:50] And then they might be over at the couch if I'm taking a break, watching TV with my dog.
[00:48:54] And they're sort of like at my bed, but also in my closet.
[00:48:58] And that is really like, I'm in 40 different directions.
[00:49:03] Right.
[00:49:03] Yeah.
[00:49:04] So, wow.
[00:49:04] And if her shoes are in the front of the house, they might be in the career sector, which is pointing her in the direction that she wants to go.
[00:49:16] Okay.
[00:49:16] However, when you look at it from your perspective, there's someone else's career direction in your career sector, too.
[00:49:25] Like you have to look at shared space.
[00:49:29] How do I want to lay this out?
[00:49:31] You know, do I want to just say, it's okay.
[00:49:34] She can leave her shoes there.
[00:49:35] She's going in the direction she wants to go.
[00:49:38] I'm going to assess my career area, maybe on the top of my desk or maybe, you know, in a different room of the house.
[00:49:46] I'm going to lay out the map because I don't want to change that juju that she's got going on.
[00:49:52] She's, you know, the energy is working for her over there.
[00:49:55] So let me assess mine and let me get all my shoes together and put them in a different place.
[00:50:01] Yes.
[00:50:01] Maybe I need to do a little, because half the time I'm like, where are my black flip flops?
[00:50:05] It's always flip flops, you know, living at the coast.
[00:50:07] I'm loving open toes.
[00:50:09] So I'm like, where are my black flip flops?
[00:50:11] Well, now where are my Birkenstocks?
[00:50:12] Where are the flip flops I bought in Mexico?
[00:50:14] I can't find any of my flip flops.
[00:50:15] And then I have to wear a closed toe shoe.
[00:50:16] And I'm like, oh, beside myself.
[00:50:19] I hear you.
[00:50:20] Yeah.
[00:50:21] I hear you.
[00:50:21] So maybe I could put a remedy in that area?
[00:50:25] You could.
[00:50:26] You could put an organizer or you could just choose to collect and change the flow at a particular
[00:50:32] time of day.
[00:50:33] I have one more question for you.
[00:50:36] So what we've done is we've talked about like what the benefits of feng shui are.
[00:50:41] Um, and that's just like matching up your land.
[00:50:44] I find anytime you can align really your land, your internal landscape with the actions you're
[00:50:50] doing, the people you're hanging around with the, you know, the, the things you're incorporating
[00:50:54] in your life.
[00:50:55] Um, so it's aligning that interior landscape and the, just the good, like frictionless living
[00:51:01] that happens with that.
[00:51:03] And the one quick tip is find your shoe, move 27 things and find your shoes.
[00:51:08] Right.
[00:51:09] Right.
[00:51:09] Um, I think my last question is how, um, hard is it to feng shui your house?
[00:51:20] Is this a, you have to do it all in one thing, or if you could just bite off one chunk, is
[00:51:27] it room by room?
[00:51:28] Is it move 27 things?
[00:51:31] What's the first step?
[00:51:34] Uh, it's a practice.
[00:51:36] Okay.
[00:51:37] It's a commitment.
[00:51:38] It's a relationship.
[00:51:39] It's a relationship to change.
[00:51:43] So if you ask me to come into your home and give you recommendations, we're going to prioritize
[00:51:50] them because you're going to be overwhelmed with too many changes at once.
[00:51:54] And guess what?
[00:51:55] Chances are you're going to fail.
[00:51:57] Yeah.
[00:51:58] You know, because you're going to be.
[00:52:00] Because everybody does that.
[00:52:01] That's why myself included.
[00:52:03] That's why I have a job.
[00:52:04] Yeah.
[00:52:05] Yeah.
[00:52:05] You're going to be overwhelmed, you know, but it's a, it's a practice and it's a journey.
[00:52:10] And it's, it's like your, it's like your 12 step program that you mentioned, you know,
[00:52:17] it's a process and you circle back around to another, you know, one of those steps and you
[00:52:21] come back around.
[00:52:22] The energy changes based on relationships, based on events that you have at your house, based on
[00:52:29] changing jobs, you know, your health and wellbeing changes.
[00:52:34] You add a new family member.
[00:52:36] You add a new pet.
[00:52:37] You change the color of your curtains.
[00:52:40] You know what I mean?
[00:52:40] It, there are so many things.
[00:52:43] It's not a one and done thing.
[00:52:45] Feng shui is a practice and it is a mindset and it is all about flow.
[00:52:53] And I wish that I could say, let's just put everything where it goes and let's just leave
[00:52:58] it there.
[00:52:59] But at some point you're going to need those Birkenstocks versus those.
[00:53:03] My black flip flops.
[00:53:04] Yes.
[00:53:05] Yes.
[00:53:06] You know?
[00:53:07] Because only my Birks can ride my bike well.
[00:53:09] The other flip flops aren't stable enough to ride my bike.
[00:53:12] Well, see, and that's, you know, that would mess you up on, on the journey.
[00:53:17] So we don't want that.
[00:53:18] Yes.
[00:53:19] So many things.
[00:53:19] Well, Beth, is there anything else we've missed or people have to know before we go?
[00:53:25] Oh, honey, there is a mountain of stuff, but you know, this is, this is a good place.
[00:53:32] This was a fun way to delve into it because it gave, you know, it gave a fun approach to
[00:53:38] it just in the dialogue.
[00:53:41] So, well, I really appreciate you being here.
[00:53:44] And honestly, I'm like mapping out my house in my head and already thinking of like what
[00:53:48] little remedy things I'm going to put and where.
[00:53:51] So I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
[00:53:54] You know, Amy, we could come back and do a check back with Amy to see how she cleaned
[00:53:59] up her effing Feng Shui stuff.
[00:54:02] You know what I'm saying?
[00:54:03] Oh, I would love that.
[00:54:04] We can make the list.
[00:54:05] We can't tell all the secrets, but we can make the list.
[00:54:09] Absolutely.
[00:54:09] That would be great.
[00:54:11] Well, if you guys have gotten something from this, I hope you have.
[00:54:15] Like, share, subscribe to this podcast.
[00:54:19] And really, one thing I really am, I think my biggest takeaway from this is your internal
[00:54:26] landscape matters.
[00:54:29] You're important.
[00:54:31] And having a reflection of you is important.
[00:54:34] And we don't get it right all the time, but you can just give yourself some grace and just
[00:54:41] remap it.
[00:54:42] So we'll see you next time.
[00:54:44] We'll help the AF.
[00:54:53] Thank you.
