[00:00:02] What you want, when you want it, where you want it. This is The MESH.

[00:00:07] Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to episode 98 volume 5 of Western North Carolina's most underrated podcast, We Are Big Fan.

[00:00:24] My name is Chad East and I'm a big fan of watching my daughter play soccer on the same soccer field I played on 30 years ago at Good Old Hickory High School Stadium.

[00:00:35] Now it's known as, doesn't have a name? The high soccer one? No the turf that's where they played last night.

[00:00:43] On the real turf, the real field, the elder field, yes, so it's coach David Elderfield. I thought I had another name too.

[00:00:50] Anyway, coach David Elderfield also pulling out my racquetball racket from the cobwebs of 18 years of dust and starting to play again.

[00:00:58] And last but not least, my neighbor, Erica Rollins, sourdough bread.

[00:01:05] Have you tasted this? She's a phenomenal chef. She can bake all kinds of stuff.

[00:01:12] So the first one I ever tasted was jalapeno sourdough bread. Wonderful.

[00:01:16] The one we got last week was just plain old sourdough bread. Still a 10, a perfect 10.

[00:01:24] I heard she makes the cinnamon one. She does. Have you tried that one? I have. You probably tried them all. I've tried them all.

[00:01:29] Favorite sourdough bread? Cinnamon is pretty good because you can toast it and have it for breakfast. So we took it on a mountain trip, not too long ago.

[00:01:38] Erica, keep it up. My name is Hank, my Hank fan. My name is Hank Immer and I am not a big fan of watching the planet implode over the primaries.

[00:01:49] Staring out at my grass and seeing uneven growth, which leads to having to mow my grass. I can't start Chad. I don't want to start.

[00:01:57] And having to negotiate with my elderly dog to come back in the house at 11 p.m. so I could go to sleep. Not a big fan.

[00:02:04] Oh, we, let's talk about, let's start there with the dog stuff. So my dog is famous for going and it's always at 3 30 in the morning.

[00:02:11] 3 30 in the morning. You hear down from like downstairs. He's clawing on the door. He wants to go out. He don't want to go out to pee.

[00:02:20] He just goes out there to kind of hang out. Look around and I think maybe drink beer, smoke, ziggies. But it's always at 3 30. So I do it.

[00:02:27] I feel bad for him because I was like, what if he really does have to pee? You know, I wouldn't go out. Well, I don't want him to suffer.

[00:02:32] So I've let him out the last, just about two weeks in a row. He's been doing this every night for two weeks. Every night.

[00:02:37] You got to shut that down. Last Jennifer was like, you can't do it anymore. So last night I just let him suffer and he just wanted to hang.

[00:02:45] He was fine. No pee, no nothing in the house. Just wanted to go outside. Yeah. Your dog, simpler but not 3 30. He's more of an 11 o'clock in the evening kind of chat.

[00:02:54] I'm the master of my domain. Okay. So like no dogs going to rule my house. Running your life. When my dog gets up in the middle of the night.

[00:03:01] Yeah. I don't know it does. Gotcha. I have no idea. Now I will tell you about 10 or so. I'll let the dog out to go to the bathroom and he'll sit at the door.

[00:03:12] She'll sit at the door and I'll go, all right, you got to go to the bathroom and she'll go out there and she'll just stand.

[00:03:16] Yes. Like she done like just like Cohen just wants to chill. Just looking around. Like smell around. You know, and just doesn't want to miss anything.

[00:03:23] So I mean, I understand. But the 3 30 things see my mom does the same thing. My mom's cat. I'd kill this cat.

[00:03:30] It winds and meows and claws all at her head and everything social let her out. And it just wants to go hang out and like 30 minutes later it's outside her door.

[00:03:39] Meowing. Yeah. Yeah. So what happened two nights ago is I let Cohen out and I fell asleep waiting for him on the couch and then at 445 I hear Jennifer come because he was barking and all.

[00:03:52] I slept right through it. She coming down the stairs to the door. What's going on here? I'm like, I'm sorry. I just didn't hear him. You know, and so this is pretty funny.

[00:04:01] Koa is a really he looks kind of like a lion. He has a lot of hair like a little man. And so what he does he walks outside and I watch him.

[00:04:09] It just trips me out and he's like Simba on Pride Rock. Like he just does like this and surveys his land. You know, like I just want to scream.

[00:04:17] Hello Lion. Every time he does it because he does the same thing with that lion man. This is my quarter acre. Exactly. I own this place.

[00:04:28] Don't mess with me. But anyway, no more 3 30 in the morning's promise. Nice. Well, that's good. That's good here. Well, walk me down.

[00:04:36] Yeah. Your daughter playing Lucy Rose, which is good because she hadn't played soccer in what year to her. She plays travel but she got hurt.

[00:04:46] Exactly. So the big question was Hank, we're now in high school where sports are just different. You know, you can't just come and go as you please.

[00:04:57] You got to go to practice. You got to write the time and if you want to be part of the team, but you know she dances a lot too. Yeah.

[00:05:03] And so phenomenal dancer really good dancer. Yeah, really, really good dancer. So talk to the coach and this was about I'm not we talk about this conversation about a month ago.

[00:05:13] We have not okay. Not on the podcast. And so we were doing the walkthrough second semester girl soccer takes place second semester and I before the walkthrough that's when the kids walk through to see where their classes are.

[00:05:26] I was like Lucy, it's time if you want to play soccer, you need to let me know or let the coach know or you're going to dance. We got to decide what we're going to do.

[00:05:34] And she was like, I really want to play but they're not going to let me because I'm not going to make the practice. I was like, no, no, no, the question is do you want to play?

[00:05:42] If so, we'll figure out a way and at least talk to the coach. All they can do is say no. But instead of saying yeah, I want to play but they're not going to let me.

[00:05:50] No, we're not doing that. Let's go find out for sure. Have you noticed kids do that these days? They always assume no it's not going to work out so I'm not going to do it.

[00:05:58] Have you noticed this? I've noticed it from a lot of kids that I talked to. So anyway, the walkthrough is done. I go to the coach's office and I said coach, my name is Chad East.

[00:06:09] My daughter is Lucy Rose East who has played soccer her whole life. And I'm just, I want to tell you about our situation. He was like, I was waiting for you to come talk to me.

[00:06:18] All right. So he had already heard that Lucy wanted to play. And so I was like, our situation is we dance three to four days a week, four hours a day after school.

[00:06:28] We'd have a hard time making all the practices in the games but my wish would be if we can just so she could be a part of the team.

[00:06:36] Maybe she just works out when she can work out. She doesn't even have to be on the team. Maybe she can just work out with you and she was like, I'll do you one better.

[00:06:43] If she can make it to the practices, let her come to the practices. If she can't, no biggie, but we want her on the team.

[00:06:50] Because he worried if she missed one year, she may never come back. So what has happened has been pretty wonderful.

[00:06:59] She's no dancing on Tuesday, but practices are start, soccer practice start right after school three o'clock until 4.30 where her dance done start till 4.15.

[00:07:09] So I pick her up at four. We go straight and so she misses 15 minutes of practice and we go straight to dance, drop off and then she dances till 8.15.

[00:07:18] Which that's a long ass day.

[00:07:20] Heck of a schedule.

[00:07:21] But this is what she wants to do.

[00:07:23] Sure.

[00:07:24] And so she's getting to play. We played.

[00:07:26] She enjoying it?

[00:07:27] She's loving it.

[00:07:28] Great.

[00:07:29] Loving it. She's part of a team. They're playing like yesterday they played a Charlotte school who would Charlotte Latin. Is that right?

[00:07:35] Yeah, they're Charlotte Latin.

[00:07:36] And she played the whole game. They this team was way more skilled, but Hickory as always for the last 30 years, we're a bunch of scrappy, you know, Hickory high soccer teams have been scrappy, not as skilled as some of the Charlotte teams.

[00:07:51] But we got a little bit of dog in us and that's what they showed last night. So zero zero with one minute to go. Some girl kicks one from about 30 yards, barely over our keeper's heads into the net.

[00:08:02] We lose one.

[00:08:03] But they gained a lot of confidence from it. So anyway, she got to play on the big field where we used to play growing up before the soccer field they have now.

[00:08:11] So we played on the turf and it was just a great experience to see her out there on the same field I played on many moons ago.

[00:08:18] Yes. So anyway, that's what's going on there.

[00:08:20] Nice.

[00:08:21] Yeah.

[00:08:22] Well, I got to tell you this weekend, this past week, Granby had a dance and you experienced Granby dances?

[00:08:28] Of course.

[00:08:29] Right?

[00:08:30] Yes.

[00:08:31] But Granby as much pride in everything that the kids have and the teachers have, it's just not a whole lot of familial support, I'll say.

[00:08:41] Right? And maybe that they can't be right. So Harris couldn't go to the dance but I said that I'd chaperone.

[00:08:47] Okay.

[00:08:48] So I went and I chaperoned it and I had to regulate pizza and soda, you know, because you get one slice and whatever.

[00:08:55] Yep.

[00:08:56] But we had kids dressed up. We had kids dressed down.

[00:09:00] When you say dressed up, I mean we're like full to the nines.

[00:09:04] Yes.

[00:09:05] But ties.

[00:09:06] I've seen them.

[00:09:07] I did it last year.

[00:09:08] Yes.

[00:09:09] Yeah, ties and vests and dresses.

[00:09:10] Looking great.

[00:09:11] Looking great.

[00:09:12] And then we had everything from what kids wear to school, sweatpants and sweatshirts and everything else.

[00:09:15] But the thing that I saw the most is the teachers out there dancing and having a good time making the kids want to dance.

[00:09:21] Yeah.

[00:09:22] Sure.

[00:09:23] And it was a lot of fun but I'll tell you, Chad, I was walking after my duties in the pizza hut.

[00:09:28] I had to walk to the gymnasium and while I was walking, a young man stopped me.

[00:09:35] Yeah.

[00:09:36] And he said, hey, I love your podcast.

[00:09:39] This is unbelievable.

[00:09:40] So we have reached, I don't know what this young man's name is.

[00:09:43] I'm going to have to ask Harris.

[00:09:44] Harris will know but there's an eighth grader at Grandview that first of all came up to me and congratulations young man.

[00:09:53] Incredible.

[00:09:54] Say what you had to say and said that he was a big fan of ours.

[00:09:59] And so we're reaching the youth.

[00:10:01] If we can really break into this middle school, these clicks in the middle school, I mean we're onto something there.

[00:10:08] I mean should we start focusing our topics based on middle school stuff?

[00:10:12] I was going to say, does this tell you what our material is like?

[00:10:16] I don't, you know the only problem with that is we have to make sure that our content is useful.

[00:10:24] Yeah of course.

[00:10:25] But it was great.

[00:10:26] I want to give a shout out to that young man.

[00:10:28] Thank you for coming out.

[00:10:29] That was great.

[00:10:30] Oh that's awesome.

[00:10:31] It made you feel really good I'm sure.

[00:10:32] So you know and I know you're going to out everybody says I'm full of bull here but you know.

[00:10:37] You're full of it.

[00:10:38] I'm kind of a Grandview legend.

[00:10:40] All right.

[00:10:41] So listen to this.

[00:10:44] This is noble.

[00:10:46] All right so my eighth grade year I was student body president of Grandview Middle School, right?

[00:10:51] And that's when we were at the old location.

[00:10:53] Well under my governmental rule when I was you know the president I was like you know it would be a great idea to create this thing when a student does really good for a week or a month.

[00:11:04] They get a pass to go into the Eagles Nest and what the Eagles Nest was a room off of the lunch room where you could listen to music, watch TV,

[00:11:12] hang out with your friends but only for the students that you know the teachers would nominate to go to the Eagles Nest.

[00:11:19] So I created the Eagles Nest when they moved Grandview to the new location.

[00:11:24] Guess what they brought along with the bank?

[00:11:26] The Eagles Nest.

[00:11:27] There's no talk of the Eagles Nest.

[00:11:29] Now it's gone but when it first came back it was there.

[00:11:32] The other thing under my government my rule under my thumb.

[00:11:37] Under your rule.

[00:11:39] Under my rule when I was the president.

[00:11:41] Doesn't sound like a kid.

[00:11:42] We brought the eighth grade dance back so it was gone for many moons and then it was the year that Michael.

[00:11:50] You brought Bending Machines.

[00:11:51] Michael Jackson.

[00:11:52] No did not bring Bending Machines.

[00:11:53] Michael Jackson he was number one on the charts with that album Bad.

[00:11:57] Do you remember?

[00:11:58] Do I remember that?

[00:11:59] Yes that was my eighth grade year and so it was what's that DJ that's been around forever?

[00:12:06] Joe Bunn?

[00:12:07] No and Hickory.

[00:12:08] Oh yeah.

[00:12:09] He's probably like 90 years old now.

[00:12:10] He's got Smokin...

[00:12:11] He's got Bubbles coming out of his...

[00:12:12] Yeah what is his name?

[00:12:13] What is his name?

[00:12:14] Anyway he would Sid the Surf.

[00:12:15] Sid the Surf.

[00:12:16] He was there and you know it was like dun dun dun dun dun dun dun.

[00:12:22] Michael Jackson's on this this start and he was like chat ease to the dance floor please.

[00:12:26] Chat ease to the dance floor so I had to get my mom and dad were chaperoning.

[00:12:30] I had to get in the middle of the circle which you know I've been known to do.

[00:12:34] Which I've been known to do.

[00:12:35] Which I'm the shy little guy.

[00:12:36] Not an eighth grade.

[00:12:37] So a shy little guy was sixth and seventh grade.

[00:12:39] Eighth grade.

[00:12:40] Come on out of my shell.

[00:12:42] Coming out of my shell.

[00:12:43] So I get in the middle and I grab this girl and I twirl her in the middle and I was dancing

[00:12:48] and the memories I have because I know I didn't do Michael very good.

[00:12:53] I just...

[00:12:54] I don't know.

[00:12:55] It wasn't my best event.

[00:12:57] My mom and dad were looking.

[00:12:58] I couldn't do them.

[00:12:59] My pelvic thrust you know what I'm saying?

[00:13:01] I couldn't bring out all the stops.

[00:13:03] Because mom and dad are there chaperoning.

[00:13:05] But that's the reason why Harris had a Grammy dance.

[00:13:08] Harris had a Grammy dance is because of me.

[00:13:10] Back in eighth grade.

[00:13:11] I brought it back up.

[00:13:12] Anything you want to take credit for I'll give it to you buddy.

[00:13:15] Wonderful.

[00:13:16] What was he just wanting that he missed it?

[00:13:18] Because it's a big deal.

[00:13:19] Yeah it's a big deal.

[00:13:20] It was a lot of fun.

[00:13:21] They had like 90 some kids there.

[00:13:23] Awesome.

[00:13:24] So it was a lot of fun.

[00:13:26] I was happy to be a part of it.

[00:13:27] So were they selling pickles?

[00:13:29] Because last time I was there for the dance they had the pizza and they had

[00:13:32] the Coke that everybody's limited to a slice right?

[00:13:34] Yep.

[00:13:35] But they were selling pickles on the side.

[00:13:37] Yeah they sold pickles.

[00:13:38] Oh gosh I love that.

[00:13:39] We sold a bunch of stuff there and you know the funny thing is

[00:13:41] middle schoolers when they know they're not doing something right

[00:13:44] they can't hide it.

[00:13:47] And so like I had pizza on a table.

[00:13:49] And I knew like everybody, I was checking faces like ID's

[00:13:53] when people would come up.

[00:13:54] And you'd have a boy come up and he'd be like

[00:13:56] do do do do do.

[00:13:57] And he'd go to grab one and I'd be like wait a minute

[00:13:59] but you already have one and he'd be like yeah

[00:14:01] and he'd walk off.

[00:14:02] And so you know they don't sell it really good

[00:14:04] which is great because I mean

[00:14:05] but you did see a lot of like genuine emotion out there.

[00:14:10] So it was, I mean it was a ton of fun.

[00:14:11] I think everybody had a great time.

[00:14:12] Yeah wonderful.

[00:14:13] It's a good event.

[00:14:14] Thanks Chad.

[00:14:15] Yeah all that you did for Graham.

[00:14:17] Whatever I can do to help the kids

[00:14:18] I'm here for the kids.

[00:14:20] I'm here for the children.

[00:14:21] I went to College Park.

[00:14:22] We never lost the dance and we had the tornado nest

[00:14:24] and we had all that stuff.

[00:14:27] Oh it's hilarious.

[00:14:28] Okay good.

[00:14:29] Alright buddy so the other thing I wanted to mention

[00:14:30] and actually this is because of you

[00:14:33] bring out the old racket ball racket right.

[00:14:35] It's been in you know in a closet for 18 years

[00:14:40] no 13 years because I quit playing when I tore my knee up.

[00:14:43] So 13 years no racket ball back out there playing.

[00:14:46] You and I just played a little while ago at lunch.

[00:14:49] Yep.

[00:14:50] How you think I'm doing?

[00:14:51] Because now that you're at it

[00:14:52] you've been playing a lot longer than me now right.

[00:14:54] Yeah I think the thing that is just tough

[00:14:56] is you know you got to,

[00:14:58] you get you're nervous on the court

[00:15:00] because you got first of all not you

[00:15:02] I'm saying in general people are

[00:15:04] nervous on the court when you first start back.

[00:15:06] Oh because you don't really know what to do.

[00:15:08] You don't know what to do.

[00:15:09] And you just got some big people out there wailing away.

[00:15:12] Sure.

[00:15:13] You know so I think you're great.

[00:15:15] Oh thanks Hank that's what I needed.

[00:15:17] Out of the four people there

[00:15:18] I think you're the fourth best person there.

[00:15:20] So thanks for coming out.

[00:15:22] It was my pleasure.

[00:15:23] It was fun though.

[00:15:24] The strategy of that game is just so funny

[00:15:26] like you know hitting it off the top of the wall

[00:15:28] to make you move back and you know

[00:15:31] and we played with some really good guys

[00:15:33] so it's fun.

[00:15:35] It's a different type of exercise.

[00:15:37] It is.

[00:15:38] It's more of a workout than tennis.

[00:15:39] Yeah definitely.

[00:15:40] I mean big time.

[00:15:41] Definitely.

[00:15:42] Yeah I guess because maybe you're moving quicker

[00:15:43] and stopping and yeah anyway it's just

[00:15:45] a lot better cardio I would think than tennis.

[00:15:47] Yeah I love that the last time

[00:15:49] you brought out you came out there

[00:15:51] was the first time you had to rack it out

[00:15:52] in a long time.

[00:15:53] And your grip was

[00:15:55] 20 years old and after you got done

[00:15:57] shreds of your grip were all over your hand

[00:16:00] it was discolored.

[00:16:01] It was awful.

[00:16:02] It's awful.

[00:16:03] So gross.

[00:16:04] Yeah it was terrible.

[00:16:05] So Greg one of the guys we played with

[00:16:07] did say he's telling me what racket to buy

[00:16:10] so I'm getting a new racket so next time

[00:16:12] watch out.

[00:16:13] If I have new technology

[00:16:15] forget it with this level of talent

[00:16:17] with this new technology Hank

[00:16:19] just might as well clear off the court.

[00:16:21] Hopefully someday you'll be the third best on the team.

[00:16:23] That's my goal that's my goal.

[00:16:25] So what else is going on in your world Hank

[00:16:27] it's been about three to four years

[00:16:29] three to four weeks since we had our last

[00:16:31] last podcast and I did hear some really

[00:16:33] really great things about our last podcast

[00:16:35] but they missed us so what else can we

[00:16:37] need to talk about today.

[00:16:38] I think we definitely need to talk about

[00:16:40] basketball.

[00:16:41] Yes.

[00:16:42] At this point of the year we're watching

[00:16:44] the ACC

[00:16:45] and college basketball come to the end

[00:16:47] this is the last week of regular season

[00:16:49] basketball.

[00:16:50] That's right.

[00:16:51] Carolina Duke which you know it's

[00:16:52] Saturday.

[00:16:53] Even if you're not you know you're

[00:16:54] obviously state grad you still pay attention

[00:16:56] to Carolina Duke.

[00:16:57] I never miss that game.

[00:16:58] Even if if Carolina's won

[00:17:00] and Duke's 30 it's still

[00:17:02] an important game a good game.

[00:17:04] So we've got that going on coming to the

[00:17:06] end we've got March Madness

[00:17:08] or the ACC tournament and all the tournaments

[00:17:10] and then we have March Madness.

[00:17:11] Yes.

[00:17:12] So I expect the next time we come back

[00:17:14] we're gonna hear a little bit about your

[00:17:16] beach trip that you had with your buddies

[00:17:18] and we're gonna talk a little bit about

[00:17:20] my mountain trip that I had with my

[00:17:22] school buddies.

[00:17:23] Sometimes we go to the beach together

[00:17:24] sometimes not you know so last

[00:17:26] week we've done the mountains you've

[00:17:28] done the beach obviously so we'll have

[00:17:30] that to look forward to but right now

[00:17:32] what's going on is Hickory High

[00:17:34] basketball.

[00:17:35] Right?

[00:17:36] Yes.

[00:17:37] So you guys ever win anything when you

[00:17:39] were there?

[00:17:40] No.

[00:17:41] We were not very good.

[00:17:42] We were not really we made the playoffs

[00:17:44] and football one year and no I'm

[00:17:47] sorry two years early exit one year

[00:17:49] maybe one round basketball nothing

[00:17:52] soccer we're good but.

[00:17:54] You know yes now Hickory High is

[00:17:56] we're through the third round

[00:17:59] we have the fourth round on Friday

[00:18:01] against Southwest Guilford who

[00:18:03] apparently has three really good

[00:18:05] basketball players.

[00:18:06] Yes.

[00:18:07] And then if we can get through that

[00:18:09] the match up is next Tuesday.

[00:18:11] Yes.

[00:18:12] In Central Cabarras.

[00:18:13] Right and Lawrence Joel Coliseum

[00:18:15] I hear.

[00:18:16] Yes.

[00:18:17] Right.

[00:18:18] Yes so we went last I went last

[00:18:20] night to the game and you know

[00:18:22] they did early but it was more along

[00:18:24] the lines of they didn't play well

[00:18:26] you know they just didn't play well

[00:18:27] and it was you know a ten point ball

[00:18:29] game they ended up winning by 28

[00:18:30] but that's what you need

[00:18:32] out of a team is to get kind of in

[00:18:34] the trenches a little bit and figure

[00:18:36] out hey we may not be as good

[00:18:38] if we don't work as hard but

[00:18:40] you know it was a it's going to

[00:18:41] be interesting to see I'm excited

[00:18:43] to see them and hopefully they can

[00:18:45] win a couple more and and find

[00:18:47] themselves in the finals and have

[00:18:48] a chance.

[00:18:49] Think about the run of Hickory

[00:18:50] this year and last year we got a

[00:18:52] state football championship we had

[00:18:54] a tennis championship last year

[00:18:56] soccer won two years ago many of

[00:18:58] the finals this year you know the

[00:19:00] girl soccer team is fabulous

[00:19:02] and now we have an undefeated men's

[00:19:04] basketball team in the same year

[00:19:06] yes wild did you hear about the

[00:19:08] kicker for Hickory like so

[00:19:11] Braden McCourt is his yes okay

[00:19:14] yes really nice family always

[00:19:17] you know love talking to his family

[00:19:19] but he is the kicker for the

[00:19:21] football team and he plays soccer

[00:19:23] too yeah and the year that they

[00:19:25] wanted I think they won 1-0 and

[00:19:27] he had the game winning score

[00:19:29] okay yeah we played defense at

[00:19:31] year he had the game winning score

[00:19:33] so fast forward to the next

[00:19:35] year his sophomore year they

[00:19:37] played in the finals in soccer

[00:19:39] and they lost right a month

[00:19:41] later they were in the state

[00:19:43] finals for football and one yes

[00:19:45] he's got he's played in three

[00:19:47] state finals in 14 months

[00:19:49] unbelievable like unrealistic

[00:19:51] is he's soft or he's a soft

[00:19:53] so I mean you know I'm sure he's

[00:19:55] expecting this podcast is sponsored

[00:19:57] by Jackson creative a custom

[00:19:59] communication agency located

[00:20:01] in downtown Hickory North Carolina

[00:20:03] specializing in online content

[00:20:05] creation to learn more

[00:20:07] visit the Jackson creative

[00:20:09] dot com Jackson

[00:20:11] creative we tell your story

[00:20:13] eight state championship runs

[00:20:15] I've been telling you and I hope he does

[00:20:17] I hope he does too I hope he does

[00:20:19] did you ever when you were in high school

[00:20:21] did you ever have a really good run like

[00:20:23] baseball what did y'all have a team that

[00:20:25] we lost in the first round I think

[00:20:27] every year every year one year we

[00:20:29] didn't even make it so no we were

[00:20:31] never like one of those teams at

[00:20:33] Hickory that freaked out

[00:20:35] so in 1996 I believe

[00:20:37] is that right yes that's when

[00:20:39] they had the run state championship

[00:20:41] football and then they made it to the

[00:20:43] top of the world as well right they lost

[00:20:45] they lost so it's so very

[00:20:47] similar hopefully you know this year

[00:20:49] they'll get it done but it will be hard

[00:20:51] because I heard Central Comberis

[00:20:53] 5d1 athletes two of them might be going

[00:20:55] to Carolina is what I heard unbelievable

[00:20:57] South Wilford is going to South Wilford

[00:20:59] South Wilford is going to be good on Friday

[00:21:01] so let's don't get exactly let's not get ahead

[00:21:03] of ourselves that's going to be a tough one

[00:21:05] let's take care of some business at home

[00:21:07] on Friday and then we'll worry about

[00:21:09] the other what comes to follow on Tuesday

[00:21:11] and then but anyways an exciting

[00:21:13] team to watch yes our Hickory

[00:21:15] High School Red Tornado's they get up

[00:21:17] and down they pressure the ball defensively

[00:21:19] to try to create turnovers get a couple

[00:21:21] easy buckets and

[00:21:23] they can jump out of the gym

[00:21:25] they're so athletic it's crazy

[00:21:27] could you imagine so last night I was

[00:21:29] watching a guard and for

[00:21:31] Piedmont and he was probably five

[00:21:33] nine five ten

[00:21:35] he wasn't like super big but

[00:21:37] his point guard which

[00:21:39] you know that's a high school point guard

[00:21:41] that nothing now south with

[00:21:43] Guilford's point guard is

[00:21:45] six five and is a bull right goodness

[00:21:47] now one of I would

[00:21:49] say probably our best defender one of our best

[00:21:51] is Isaiah Little John who's

[00:21:53] six five long

[00:21:55] super athletic could you imagine

[00:21:57] I'm putting you on this

[00:21:59] you're getting thrown in the ball on your side of the court

[00:22:01] and six five

[00:22:03] as fast more

[00:22:05] athletic guy guarding you I mean that's

[00:22:07] like a center you know I mean that's what you see in the

[00:22:09] NBA that's tough it's I think we're

[00:22:11] we scare a lot of people sure because of that

[00:22:13] so I was sitting

[00:22:15] first round game with Matthew

[00:22:17] Pitts he was sitting beside me he was

[00:22:19] a Hickory High School alum and actually played

[00:22:21] basketball two years for Hickory High

[00:22:23] and so we're watching it and just

[00:22:25] to see how athletic and I remember watching

[00:22:27] Hickory High when I was a junior Matthew

[00:22:29] was a senior I just wanted

[00:22:31] to see what he said I was like

[00:22:33] or about as athletic as this team right back in

[00:22:35] 1991

[00:22:37] and he was he thought about it he was like

[00:22:39] no not even close

[00:22:41] I was like good answer but

[00:22:43] they did have some really good athletes back then too

[00:22:45] but it just seems like the level of athlete now

[00:22:47] nowadays just not at Hickory but everywhere

[00:22:49] yeah it's a different level

[00:22:51] of athlete you were just talking to me about

[00:22:53] this one kid yeah I mean

[00:22:55] yeah I mean there's there's kids in every sport

[00:22:57] not just in but there's kids in every sport

[00:22:59] that hit the genetic

[00:23:01] lottery yes they

[00:23:03] work their tail off

[00:23:05] their nutrition

[00:23:07] is thoughtful there you know everything

[00:23:09] is thoughtful and it's

[00:23:11] creating this and with social media

[00:23:13] it's it's probably creating

[00:23:15] a little bit of anxiety for the

[00:23:17] normal kid to be like how in the world can I

[00:23:19] compete exactly what my different stages

[00:23:21] you know I mean people are hitting

[00:23:23] puberty and not even puberty you're not

[00:23:25] you know there's plenty of players that aren't 6'5

[00:23:27] to 20 in the major league

[00:23:29] baseball or whatever so I mean I think

[00:23:31] it's kind of funny because every sport

[00:23:33] has these phenoms

[00:23:35] and they certainly get a lot of the tension

[00:23:37] yes certainly get a lot of the tension

[00:23:39] so we are hopeful Hickory Howell continue to

[00:23:41] move on yeah I hope so too man

[00:23:43] so you know there's just an interesting

[00:23:45] thing that you know we talked about briefly

[00:23:47] before we got into the studio today

[00:23:49] and you know back in the day I used

[00:23:51] to watch a lot of movies remember and

[00:23:53] some of the movies that I would watch

[00:23:55] specifically if a new superhero

[00:23:57] movie came out this is probably about 10-12

[00:23:59] years ago right around the Spider-Man

[00:24:01] and the Iron Man craze

[00:24:03] I would rush to the theater

[00:24:05] to see it by myself on a Tuesday or

[00:24:07] X-Men you know I was big

[00:24:09] into that I didn't even like the X-Men

[00:24:11] really I love that I love Marvel I love

[00:24:13] all the Marvel stuff

[00:24:15] Avengers big yes

[00:24:17] so me too but as

[00:24:19] I'm almost 50 years old

[00:24:21] I know Curly

[00:24:23] I have kind of matured out of superhero

[00:24:25] movies I know you haven't

[00:24:27] gone to see a movie in the movie theater

[00:24:29] superhero movies since Godzilla

[00:24:31] he's not a superhero

[00:24:33] I guess you could call him a superhero

[00:24:35] but like one of the superhero

[00:24:37] in at least five years

[00:24:39] so my point is

[00:24:41] a couple superhero movies have come out

[00:24:43] in the last three months that have been

[00:24:45] the biggest bombs of all time

[00:24:47] superhero stuff Aquaman

[00:24:49] too came out bust

[00:24:51] there's a movie called the Marbles

[00:24:53] it's all chicks and they like fly

[00:24:55] around complete bomb

[00:24:57] but the biggest bomb of them all

[00:24:59] happened two weeks ago

[00:25:01] the movie is called Madame Web

[00:25:03] so it's a Spider-Man

[00:25:05] series all girls

[00:25:07] that have these different powers

[00:25:09] Sydney Sweeney you know who's

[00:25:11] I've heard all about her she's in it

[00:25:13] okay so maybe that's why I watched

[00:25:15] the trailer about 28 times

[00:25:17] however it got like

[00:25:19] a 2 on rotten tomatoes

[00:25:21] or whatever and I think 12 web

[00:25:23] 2 webs and I think 12 people

[00:25:25] total went to go see it in the theater

[00:25:27] so I was thinking about all this stuff

[00:25:29] and you know there was a villain in this movie that

[00:25:31] you know

[00:25:33] the Orchard Man

[00:25:35] just that you would never remember

[00:25:37] he was like a normal dude yes

[00:25:39] like the exterminator

[00:25:41] yeah normal dude I was like

[00:25:43] so maybe think back in the day

[00:25:45] all of the villains of superhero

[00:25:47] like there been some real

[00:25:49] awesome ones like obviously the Joker

[00:25:51] he's the number one villain to everybody

[00:25:53] and you know like

[00:25:55] Superman's nemesis

[00:25:57] Lex Luthor

[00:25:59] badass dude right just so wonderful

[00:26:01] so I started going through the list

[00:26:03] and you know I brought up a few other ones

[00:26:05] you've got Magneto

[00:26:07] he's the X-Man

[00:26:09] you got Bane remember you got Too Faced

[00:26:11] the Penguin

[00:26:13] so going through them all

[00:26:15] and I was like you know this might be kind of corny

[00:26:17] but my favorite of them

[00:26:19] all was

[00:26:21] the Riddler and so I always could imagine myself

[00:26:23] you know

[00:26:25] as a villain as the Riddler

[00:26:27] and I would say if like if you were the

[00:26:29] Superman or Batman and I'm the Riddler

[00:26:31] I'd be like hello Hank

[00:26:33] riddle me this

[00:26:35] look I'm looking at you

[00:26:37] riddle me this

[00:26:39] and I would have a list of riddles

[00:26:41] you'd have to write them down

[00:26:43] I think the Riddler

[00:26:45] in my mind no you made it sound like you had a list in your hand

[00:26:47] because the Riddler would be prepared I'd imagine

[00:26:49] so if I was this villain

[00:26:51] and I was the Riddler this is one I would ask you

[00:26:53] riddle me this

[00:26:55] Hank all right

[00:26:57] what's red though

[00:26:59] what's black and white

[00:27:01] and red all over

[00:27:03] a page in a book

[00:27:05] newspaper

[00:27:07] so those are the riddles and so every time you don't get it right

[00:27:09] or kill somebody

[00:27:11] I kill someone oh man

[00:27:13] I don't think you're that yeah you ready for another one

[00:27:15] I guess

[00:27:17] so if you're one people dead

[00:27:19] right now already you missed that

[00:27:21] so one person dead let's CJ

[00:27:23] CJ is dead right now

[00:27:25] I'm going to keep going

[00:27:27] can you tell me who the person is

[00:27:29] next one we're going to say this is Michael Banks

[00:27:31] Michael Banks okay

[00:27:33] during morning

[00:27:35] time

[00:27:37] first of all riddle me this

[00:27:39] during morning

[00:27:41] I walk with two legs

[00:27:43] in the afternoon

[00:27:45] I walk with three

[00:27:47] and in the evening

[00:27:49] time

[00:27:51] I walk with four legs

[00:27:53] who am I

[00:27:55] who am I

[00:27:57] this is for Michael's life

[00:27:59] I mean I want you to think

[00:28:01] in morning time

[00:28:03] don't say this

[00:28:05] you're fouling me up here

[00:28:07] two legs in the morning

[00:28:09] three in the afternoon

[00:28:11] no I screwed this up sorry

[00:28:13] in the morning I walk with four

[00:28:15] legs

[00:28:17] in the afternoon

[00:28:19] I walk with three

[00:28:23] no shoot it's four in the morning

[00:28:25] two in the afternoon

[00:28:27] three in the evening

[00:28:29] what am I

[00:28:31] I don't even know if this is right

[00:28:33] I'm a man

[00:28:35] I'm a man

[00:28:37] think about when you grow up

[00:28:39] when you're a baby in the morning part of your life

[00:28:41] you're crawling on four legs

[00:28:43] this is the demonstrate on the

[00:28:45] afternoon midlife

[00:28:47] midlife for a man you're walking on two legs

[00:28:49] but as you get older

[00:28:51] Hank in your night

[00:28:53] the night of your life

[00:28:55] you know the end

[00:28:57] you walk with a cane that's three legs

[00:28:59] yes it would be four

[00:29:01] two three that's what I said at the end

[00:29:03] I screwed it up

[00:29:05] our producer is having to read these words

[00:29:07] oh here we go what walks on four legs

[00:29:09] two legs in the afternoon three legs in the evening

[00:29:11] and no legs at night

[00:29:13] this is not halloween

[00:29:15] so let me just

[00:29:17] you

[00:29:19] it's the riddle of the sphinx

[00:29:21] you riddle you did the

[00:29:23] this riddle yes and you made it sound like it was a 24 hour deal

[00:29:25] but then you

[00:29:27] then you go deeper into life and everything else

[00:29:29] well I mean that's how riddles work Hank

[00:29:31] okay okay okay you're a terrible superhero

[00:29:33] so I need to give some Michael's dad

[00:29:35] CJ's dad are you ready

[00:29:37] to risk

[00:29:39] are you ready to risk Greg

[00:29:41] oh I'm gonna fight

[00:29:43] for that guys life okay

[00:29:45] riddle me this

[00:29:47] what is the difference between

[00:29:49] a teacher and a train

[00:29:51] a teacher and a train

[00:29:55] a teacher and a train

[00:29:57] time's up

[00:30:01] the teacher says spit out

[00:30:03] the gum the train

[00:30:05] says chew chew

[00:30:07] ha ha ha

[00:30:13] you're no longer allowed on the podcast chat

[00:30:15] you're no longer allowed

[00:30:17] riddle strikes again

[00:30:19] you're no longer allowed on the podcast

[00:30:21] so I think the first one I would have saved CJ's life

[00:30:23] because I said a book

[00:30:25] okay that's close CJ alright he's just half dead

[00:30:27] he's injured

[00:30:29] yes torn ACL

[00:30:31] but Michael and Greg are now officially gone

[00:30:33] so how about your favorite villain

[00:30:35] who did you like the best

[00:30:37] well you know you talked about Lex Luthor

[00:30:39] I liked Lex Luthor he was great

[00:30:41] if you actually like guys

[00:30:43] that you were not scared of

[00:30:45] but the guy that you're like hey if he gets involved

[00:30:47] this is trouble Thanos was that dude

[00:30:49] I mean who would have thought

[00:30:51] they had to go to all ends of the world

[00:30:53] to deal with that guy

[00:30:55] but

[00:30:57] Poison Ivy wouldn't bad look at

[00:30:59] you know I might put

[00:31:01] on some lotion every once in a while

[00:31:03] I got you know stung by poison ivy

[00:31:05] but uh you know I wouldn't mind

[00:31:07] her chasing after me if I was a superhero

[00:31:09] I might have to get kidnapped

[00:31:11] I might have to lose that battle

[00:31:13] but the Joker

[00:31:15] how can you go wrong with the Joker

[00:31:17] he is sadistic and evil and terrible

[00:31:19] and best villain of all time

[00:31:21] I will tell you though I saw a hilarious

[00:31:23] cartoon it was a meme

[00:31:25] the other day and it was the cartoon

[00:31:27] and it was Batman laying

[00:31:29] on a bed

[00:31:31] and then there was Superman

[00:31:33] and another guy standing over him

[00:31:35] and they were lip syncing

[00:31:37] like they were saying what he was saying

[00:31:39] instead of what they were saying

[00:31:41] they were talking over him

[00:31:43] and it was pretty much Superman

[00:31:45] was calling out Batman

[00:31:47] that he was just a rich

[00:31:49] man in a costume

[00:31:51] and he needed to stop

[00:31:53] pretending that he was a superhero

[00:31:55] have you seen this? I'll show it to you

[00:31:57] afterwards it's hilarious because

[00:31:59] it ended up you really started to think

[00:32:01] Batman is just a rich dude

[00:32:03] in a costume

[00:32:05] he's got weapons and tools

[00:32:07] but he's got no real superpower

[00:32:09] he doesn't have anything

[00:32:11] he's got Wayne Manor

[00:32:13] he just got cashed

[00:32:15] about all these wonderful gadgets

[00:32:17] Superman's got a point there

[00:32:19] he does have a point there

[00:32:21] so hey before we end this podcast

[00:32:23] today on this rainy Wednesday

[00:32:25] March the 6th

[00:32:27] live coming at you live

[00:32:29] anything else we need to talk about

[00:32:31] before we get out of here today buddy

[00:32:33] I think that

[00:32:35] I'm excited about spring

[00:32:37] we got baseball coming up

[00:32:39] I'm not really excited about that

[00:32:41] but I'm glad

[00:32:43] we're not a political show

[00:32:45] nor are we going to make a political show

[00:32:47] but the primary being over yesterday

[00:32:49] is just amazing to me

[00:32:51] how our planet just

[00:32:53] our country just

[00:32:55] explodes over

[00:32:57] politics

[00:32:59] and I'm kind of

[00:33:01] not looking forward to

[00:33:03] and I'm not saying this either side

[00:33:05] or any candidate

[00:33:07] I'm just not looking forward to between now

[00:33:09] and November to have to endure

[00:33:11] all of the junk that comes

[00:33:13] with this election

[00:33:15] so you know

[00:33:17] let's just put our head down

[00:33:19] get to the end

[00:33:21] it's going to be brutal

[00:33:23] it's going to be terrible

[00:33:25] but again

[00:33:27] yeah I kind of don't really

[00:33:29] discuss much politics

[00:33:31] because I've got buddies

[00:33:33] on both sides

[00:33:35] and if I'm kind of in the middle

[00:33:37] if I say one thing to this one fellow

[00:33:39] well it might set him off

[00:33:41] and I know it'll set this other fellow off

[00:33:43] so I just kind of keep my mouth shut a lot

[00:33:45] yeah I think that's a smart way to

[00:33:47] handle many of these

[00:33:49] political topics

[00:33:51] alright well before we leave

[00:33:53] let's do pick something Hank

[00:33:55] so the next time we come together

[00:33:57] we're going to be talking about the

[00:33:59] coming of starch madness

[00:34:01] so you just get ready for that

[00:34:03] starch madness right around the corner

[00:34:05] I had the opportunity

[00:34:07] to pick four teams that I thought

[00:34:09] would cut down nets

[00:34:11] no points

[00:34:13] for final four, no points for sweet 16

[00:34:15] you get to pick four teams

[00:34:17] that I think that can win the whole thing

[00:34:19] and if so

[00:34:21] and other people, I'm in a group of 100

[00:34:23] and if you get the winner

[00:34:25] is that a sleeper for you?

[00:34:27] I like Baylor

[00:34:29] I'll give you a couple sleepers but here's who I chose

[00:34:31] I had Yukon, they're kind of the favorite

[00:34:33] Houston, kind of the favorite

[00:34:35] then I took Tennessee

[00:34:37] you know I took Tennessee

[00:34:39] and that guy's got a freak

[00:34:41] I know but see, I was saying he can

[00:34:43] like he can go get his bucket whenever he wants to

[00:34:45] so I have Yukon, Houston

[00:34:47] Tennessee and my fourth

[00:34:49] which we'll see

[00:34:51] Kansas, Kansas has a point garden

[00:34:53] really good, done score but

[00:34:55] really good leader

[00:34:57] they have the big who came from Michigan

[00:34:59] and they've got a wing score

[00:35:01] plus they have Bill Self

[00:35:03] and he has been there before

[00:35:05] so I did leave out

[00:35:07] I almost put Carolina in there

[00:35:09] because I think Carolina can make a run

[00:35:11] they got the big, they got the point garden

[00:35:13] Hubert Davis has made it to a finals before

[00:35:15] what do you

[00:35:17] I mean you're a Carolina fan

[00:35:19] if you had four would you put them in there?

[00:35:21] Baylor plays in a pretty

[00:35:23] tough conference

[00:35:25] you know I mean they've got

[00:35:27] game in, game out, they're going to be tough

[00:35:29] ACC's not real strong this year

[00:35:31] so you know

[00:35:33] Carolina has not played stellar competition

[00:35:35] and that's where they come in as a two

[00:35:37] and the next thing you know they face an

[00:35:39] eight in TCU or something

[00:35:41] like that and TCU's been playing these

[00:35:43] big teams and having a tough time

[00:35:45] so I think it's

[00:35:47] tough for me to say

[00:35:49] that they're

[00:35:51] going to be there because

[00:35:53] I don't think that they've

[00:35:55] been to the hard

[00:35:57] they're going to get surprised

[00:35:59] I like all the guys, but I like Baylor too

[00:36:01] because I think Baylor

[00:36:03] has the ingredients like you're talking about

[00:36:05] to be in it. I just know

[00:36:07] it's going to get very very excited here Hank

[00:36:09] so we're regular season

[00:36:11] in Saturday, ACC

[00:36:13] tournament kicks off next week

[00:36:15] and then we go to March Madness

[00:36:17] I think we're leaving on Thursday the 20th

[00:36:19] I believe is the date

[00:36:21] to go to the beach or going to the mountains on the same day

[00:36:23] or? Yes, well I think

[00:36:25] our friend Michael and I are leaving Friday

[00:36:27] morning first thing in the morning

[00:36:29] just because we've got games for our kids

[00:36:31] on Thursday. Michael's dead

[00:36:33] you know he lost the Riddler, took his life

[00:36:35] a few segments ago so Michael

[00:36:37] you gotta drive by yourself now I'm sorry

[00:36:39] so going

[00:36:41] Friday morning but some of the buddies

[00:36:43] are going up Thursday night and then coming back Sunday

[00:36:45] but it's kind of like

[00:36:47] outside from where you guys are going

[00:36:49] you actually could go to a

[00:36:51] place to watch it and everything

[00:36:53] we're going there in very much around you

[00:36:55] so you just hold up at the house

[00:36:57] get it on the tube there and just have a time

[00:36:59] and you know what

[00:37:01] funny thing is the house that we're going to

[00:37:03] is friend of ours

[00:37:05] I don't think he has a TV

[00:37:08] in there as of like a month

[00:37:10] ago and that was like one of the big requirements

[00:37:12] you better get something

[00:37:14] in there soon

[00:37:16] so this whole thing could

[00:37:18] change if it does not have TV

[00:37:20] you might have a good TV

[00:37:22] you might be driving down to the Applebee

[00:37:24] about 30 minutes down the road

[00:37:26] gotta have a TV, yeah we're excited

[00:37:28] cause we're going

[00:37:30] we can walk to all these bars right there

[00:37:32] and so we can

[00:37:34] pop in here, watch the first round of games

[00:37:36] listen to a little music next store

[00:37:38] here then pop and watch the next group of games

[00:37:40] anyway I'm really looking forward to it

[00:37:42] we've been doing this trip now for almost

[00:37:46] I guess since 1998

[00:37:48] how many years is that? That's a lot of years

[00:37:50] that's a ton of years, that's a lot of years

[00:37:52] so anyway the tradition continues

[00:37:54] my friend Hank so glad to be back in the studio

[00:37:56] with you to our listening audience

[00:37:58] we won't keep

[00:38:00] we won't postpone our

[00:38:02] podcast cause we missed three in a row

[00:38:04] we're going to be more consistent with it

[00:38:06] I know y'all want this big fan and we want to give it to you

[00:38:08] Olivia is coming

[00:38:10] back from spring break from Florida

[00:38:12] she's driving home, she should be home in a few hours

[00:38:14] so we'll get to see her, she had a great time

[00:38:16] in Florida with her friends

[00:38:18] for her first spring break in college

[00:38:20] so get to hear all her stories

[00:38:22] so anyway it's going to be a good rest of the week

[00:38:24] and I look forward to seeing you Hank

[00:38:26] on the tennis courts or racquetball courts

[00:38:28] sometime soon and we're looking forward to talking

[00:38:30] to you big fan listeners in two weeks
