Footcandle Films: Best of 2018
Now that we’ve entered into the early days of 2019, our show hosts Alan & Chris are all prepared to look back at 2018 and give their Top Five Films.
Do you like listening to people talk about films? What about those films that may not show up at the local multiplex but are instead showing at the smaller specialty theater across town? Then “Footcandle Films” may be the show for you. Each month, the hosts discuss and review one “smaller” film in-depth, discuss upcoming film news, and give recommendations on films that you may not be aware of, ones that you haven’t remembered in a while, or ones that are worth your time checking out. And all the while, the conversation never gets too “high-brow” or pretentious. Just two guys who enjoy talking about movies.
Your Hosts:
Alan Jackson is the co-founder of Footcandle Film Society and resides in Hickory, NC. He enjoys a wide variety of films – but mainly those of Martin Scorsese, his all time favorite Director. Despite liking smaller, independent films, Alan also likes films with giant monsters or where animals talk. Alan also thinks Citizen Kane deserves every bit of credit it ever gets.
Chris Frye, the other co-founder of Footcandle Film Society, is a fan of directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Terry Gilliam, and David Gordon Green. He lives in Newton, NC and has always been a movie buff. His favorite actors range from Steve Coogan to Christoph Waltz to Jeff Bridges. You may be surprised to know he has never seen Dirty Dancing or Pretty in Pink (gasp!)

Footcandle Films: Can You Ever Roma?
Alan & Chris have survived the snowpocalypse that walloped North Carolina and made it in to the MESH studios to discuss Melissa McCarthy’s dramatic turn in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”. This is followed by a review of Alfonso Cuaron’s latest film that is streaming exclusively on Netflix – “Roma”.
Footcandle Films: The Ballad of Buster Widows
Director Steve McQueen returns to the big screen with a heist film centered around a group of widows left to clean up their criminal husbands’ mess. Alan & Chris share their thoughts on “Widows” as well as the straight-to-Netflix Cohen Brothers anthology film “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”.
Footcandle Films: Bohemian Old Man Rhapsody
Two movies that both tell true stories are the focus of this episode. One is a big-budget depiction of one of rock music’s most flamboyant performers, while the other is a much smaller, quieter film that looks at the career of a lifetime bank robber portrayed by Robert Redford in what is said to be his last big-screen performance.
Footcandle Films: First Man Halloween
Director Damien Chazelle returns to the multiplex with a film that isn’t centered around music but instead tells the story of astronaut Neil Armstrong in “First Man”. After sharing their thoughts on this recent release, Alan and Chris celebrate the 40th anniversary of the classic “Halloween”
Footcandle Films: A Star is Puzzle Venom
With the arrival of Bradley Cooper’s remake of “A Star Is Born” starring himself and Lady Gaga in theaters it is safe to say the Oscar-bait season has officially begun. Alan & Chris discuss Mr. Cooper’s first directorial effort followed by reviews of the smaller independent film “Puzzle” and the comic book adaptation misfire “Venom” starring Tom Hardy.
Footcandle Films: American Animals Festival
October has arrived. Time for pumpkin spice lattes and a recap of the 4th annual Footcandle Film Festival. Along with recounting festival highlights, Alan & Chris share a review of American Animals – a film that was featured in this year’s festival as a special presentation.

Two smaller independent films are on the agenda today with reviews of “Leave No Trace” and “Borg vs McEnroe”. Next on the news roundup you hear about films getting their debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and what exactly is going on with the “Popular Film” Oscar.
